I think what I'm trying to get at is that it doesn't matter how we personally feel about Clarkson and the way he behaves and talks on Top Gear and yet a lot of the comments on this thread seem to be saying little else. There appears to me to be a great deal of partial judgment in spite of the fact that we don't know the full details.

Yes, mishap, and I've said exactly the same things about not knowing the full details and about what should happen if someone hits someone else at work. I don't 'like' Clarkson (not that I know him) either but that's irrelevant.

I don't 'like' David Cameron but I really don't think he's stupid and what he is reported as saying in the huffpo article seems fine to me. Saying your friend has talent isn't an interference in the justice process, it's a simple statement of fact as you see it. Several other publicly known people have said the same thing about Clarkson. Whether we agree with them is beside the point, just more irrelevance.

I think you are missing the point, which is that programmes that trivialise the dangers of speed run the risk of influencing young (particularly male) minds to the detriment of road safety.

Those of us who have been on the front line picking up the pieces that result from accidents are bound to feel more strongly about this.

I do not think there is a "hate fest" - some of just don't like him. That's how it is. I am not "yelling for justice" but simply saying that if he has assaulted someone (and we do not know the full facts) then he should have to face the full weight of our justice system; and also that some of his pronouncements should give the BBC pause for thought as to whether they wish to continue to employ him.

Reporting yourself only means something if otherwise no one would know what you had done. In this case, as well as BBC employees, there were members of the public present. And stop being so disingenuous thatbags- of course DC has weighed in. It's being reported as support as he knew it would be.

I read somewhere that it was Clarkson himself who 'reported' the fracas, whatever it was. That fits with the rumour that no formal complaint was made.

Just for clarity, I am not defending anyone; I'm attacking the silly hate fest on this thread. Some of you will hate certain people and twist what they say and do whatever it is. And you yell for justice at the same time. Justice is impartial. Just saying. I don't give a damn about Clarkson or Cameron but I do give a damn about justice.

Thanks, jess. So DH was correct. Cameron said he hoped it could be sorted out, that JC is a friend and a constituent of his (which is public knowledge already), and that Cameron's kids enjoy Top Gear.

I don't call that "weighing in". He did not judge the situation. He was equally supportive of the BBC.

I really do hope the BBC resolve this mess asap. If he was an employee the details of the investigation should be treated as confidential during and after. All that would be known was the outcome. (e.g. if he was a headteacher, all you'd know is sacked or not.)
But though he is not, technically an employee and the BBC has leaked like a sieve, one would think that public figures would have the maturity to keep quiet on the subject at least until the matter has been resolved. It is, in effect "sub judice". Also trial by media and social media is not a good idea.
But this is not a one off - Cameron was criticised by a judge for commenting on the trial on another of his buddies, Coulson, not so long ago:

Can anyone quote exactly what Cameron and Gove have said on this subject? I ask because I feel extremely doubtful that they have really "entered the fray". DH says Cameron simply said he hoped the issue would be sorted out. That sounds to me far more likely than him "supporting" JC.

DD has loved Jeremy Clarkson for the last 25 years. She passed her test first time at 17, is a very good driver and has had one very minor shunt in 23 years. Enjoying something doesn't necessarily mean being unduly influenced by it .

No maybe 30 is carrying it a bit too far durhamjen but at 18 I was "married" ( to a waste of space) with a child. I worked full time and had no benefits whatsoever. I was clueless about politics. I only knew that I paid tax, rent and lived from hand to mouth.

I don't believe that JC drove the cars as they appeared to be anyway. For goodness sake who would trust him driving a million pound Buggati the way he appeared to drive it ? Likewise most of the other expensive cars.

Mishap. What makes you think that most 17yr old drivers don't have sound influences and guidance about what driving means. A comment like that is not fair on sensible and caring parents.

Yes, they are high risk but it's unfair to suggest that they are all influenced by the likes of Jeremy Clarkson.
