For those who feel free to use the N word in its full glory, on the grounds that a handful of black rappers do, would you ever describe someone as a mong, cretin, spaz, fag, dyke, cripple, queer, or any other charming title, because someone from that group had used the word?
I had no notion of racism either as a child, and only became aware of the offensive nature of the word and its connotations years later. It was always associated in my childish mind with a lovely shade of brown, and it was in later years that I was very embarrassed by my dear MIL asking for THAT particular shade of brown very loudly in M&S and refusing to be shushed. As she pointed out, she did not mean it in a derogatory way, rather that everyone should know what colour skirt she wanted!
Who has said they feel free to use the word nigger because a handful of black rappers do, river? No-one as far as I can see. There was a remark about it perhaps being better if no-one used offensive words.
Soon we will not be allowed to buy faggots. Just because someone appropriates a word does not mean we should not be able to use it. Why should we not use the word queer in its old-fashioned sense, or for that matter the word gay. I knew girls at school called Gay. I thought cretinism was a medical term. I would not use any as a derogatory term.
Clarkson fell foul of me when the BSE thing first started. There was some footage of a cow suffering from it staggering around. Clarkson had some programme going at the time and showed it saying it was the funniest thing he had seen in ages.
