Here are the top ten common mispronunciations apparently. I was surprised not to find 'secretary' and 'February' in there. What would you add to the list?

A friend's daughter has 'auction pudding' with her roast beef. smile

I hate: "Crate" - what Clegg, Cameron etc say for create; mixing up diffuse & defuse; "haitch"; "pronounciation" (though I think it is an accepted alternative to pronunciation). But I love the Bristolian habit of adding ls to words - eg Our Glorial has diarrhoeal in Africal, ideal, windowl, Bristol.

'Deteriate' and 'deteriation' when they are, and should be pronounced as, 'deteriORate' and 'deteriORation'. These are all too frequently heard on the broadcast media.

Gd aged just 3 loved seeing her uncle as the dame in her first pontymine and currently enjoys having lunch in aunt's estronaut. I detect tv influences - Night Garden and Octonauts I think?
Feetle, am I right to think chorizo would in fact have that 't' sound pronounced in spanish? Agree about eye-beetha!

Eyeland instead of Ireland

I misheard my mother telling me to keep away from my Aunt's prized blue High Danger (as in the shrub) (well it made sense to keep away from it if it was so dangerous). I mispronounced it for years until I saw it written down - and still don't like the plants.

Two pronunciations which are, I suppose, considered archaic now, but which I cling to... de-COR-ous, not DEC-orus (from decorum, not decorare)
and fi-NANCE, not FIGH-nance.

Ibiza pronounced as eye-beetha - if you can be bothered to pronounce the 'z' properly, why not the initial 'i'?

MamaCaz Sun 16-Mar-14 08:23:41

People saying "(mis)pronounciation" instead of "(mis)pronunciation".

"Chorizo" pronounced as "choritzo". There's no 't' in it!

I'm also bugged by the very pronounced extra 'h' added to 'Northampton', especially by BBC reporters. Most older natives that I know pronounce it as it is written - North - ampton - but this is rapidly being replaced by "North - Hampton". Unimportant in the scheme of things, but it still annoys me (I'm easily annoyed! hmm )

I was watching 'escape to the country' a while a go and the small blonde presenter said ...and here is the vehicular access!...

Missing out the "L" in Railway and saying rayway as does Michael Portillo in his programmes Great British Railway Journeys, it annoys me intensely every time he says the word.

Flower of the west, I still say bendroflurazide, only because I am lazy, and furosemide, will always be lasix/frusemide and love to confuse the doctors and junior nurses for requesting maxolon, instead of metaclopramide, just shows my age. i then have to take a few steps back when my poor patients try to describe their pills by type and colour or deny having blood pressure problems because they are only on water tablets. I really love my job and I am going to be lost when I retire. Sadly I will not be missed by those who should care and don't.
as for my accent I am told by my Surrey Husband it is not proper Lowestoft, like my Step Mum and her family. I always cringed when my children remarked on it! However half an hour on the phone and I am back to 'normal' bootiful!

we had drug pronunciation and spelling lessons in Nursing school our poor tutor had a stutter, however she managed all the difficult ones perfectly.

I find 'repeat prescription' quite difficult to say.

My MIL used to be on prednisolone, and pronounced it perdissalin. But then she 'pronounced' a secondary modern school as second moddunry.

Flowerofthewest Sat 15-Mar-14 16:54:47

SuzanneL60 what about Ben-dro-flu-math-ezide! I think ? confused

Flowerofthewest Sat 15-Mar-14 16:53:18

I just love the Suffolk accent. You keep at it girl.

SuzanneL60 Sat 15-Mar-14 16:28:44

Oh dear....coming from the Suffolk Norfolk border, I might have made most of the mistakes I have seen. I get ribbed at work over comp-oo-ta (computer) I just say Normal for Norfolk....
I get more excited over
Clop-i-dog-rel and clopi-do-grel
Co-dy-dram-ol and cody-dramol
Bisop-ralol and biso-pra-lol and the list goes on

it amuses me only because I moved with my job before I settled in Surrey and holiday in the Midlands, North East or Devon. Picking up various phrases and word pronunciations. I still love telling someone I will be there to help, dreckly or just now, which is about as long as a nurses minute!

grannyactivist Sat 15-Mar-14 12:44:19

I think my biggest surprise when I was doing a pronunciation class (for my TESOL training) was the word 'tour' that I'd always thought rhymed with 'your' - not so; the correct pronunciation is too-er. shock

Flowerofthewest Sat 15-Mar-14 12:14:58

I find it hard to say 'Predictive Text' Always comes outs as 'Predictive Sex' True confused

Atqui Sat 15-Mar-14 08:39:50

I confess I pronounce the t in Christmas! but I do know how to pronounce Bruschetta Micelf, and also find that annoying!!

specki4eyes Fri 14-Mar-14 21:12:29

That very nice guy on the antiques roadshow says joolery instead of jewellery. ... 'ing' pronounced as .... 'ink drives me potty. prostrate for prostate and ax for ask - ditto.

Lilygran Fri 14-Mar-14 13:06:59

Anenome? Practically universal! Paxman can't say 'meteorology' or 'excerpt'.

besottedgran Fri 14-Mar-14 12:22:58

Pantomine instead of pantomime. Must confess, when I was small I thought it was pantomine and had to school myself to say it properly. Also vedge - table instead of veg-e-table.

NannyBarbara Fri 14-Mar-14 12:00:31

Skedule instead of sched(shed)ule and harASSment instead of HARASSment - there must be loads more but I can't think of them at the moment but these are my top pet hates in mispronunciation!
