Actually Bags and Nonu, I think there is some harm in inane, meaningless posts which time after time strike a sour, snide note in a thread in which people are trying to have a sensible discussion.

Liked the article. Think backlash has been going on for more than 5 years (porn, lads mags, compulsory depilation etc etc) But when we have a PM that tells a member of the house to "calm down dear" repeatedly it highlights her point about the establishment.

nonu Thatcher did break new ground in her career personally but she has never been accused of being a feminist, supporting or encouraging the political careers of any other women, introducing any legislation that helped women... or have I forgotten something? And the men were very happy to stab her in the back when the political tide started turning against her weren't they.

In other words, it's open to the sort of interpretation that it has been given.

I enjoyed the Suzanne Moore article and have been a bit shocked by the level of misogyny from young men on twitter/facebook etc. The use of sexual violence as a means of controlling women hasn't diminished has it. Well done Mary Beard and Suzanne Moore, and the 3 young feminists at the forefront of recent media reports. I do hope the anti feminism perpetrated by the Daily Wail in particular is negatively affected by the current discussions.

just reading my way through Manda Scott's Boudica books (really enjoying them) and although she makes it clear that there is no written history of the British tribes at that time, except that written by the Romans, she has made an excellent story of a society where men and women were able to be equal as warriors or dreamers, and where grandmothers were greatly respected and listened to - yes, I know it's unlikely, but it's fun to think about! - and leadership could descend through the female line. Where have we gone wrong?

I saw this article this morning and wanted to post it up here but still don't know how to do that.

I agree with the point that men can be chivalrous and kind until a woman starts to assert herself and that's when some of them (men) feel threatened/belittled and change from Jekyll to Hyde.

I was astonished to see that the trolling of around 1,000 tweets was happening at the rate of 50 an hour! That's one sick individual. The Last Leg programme started again last night, and recommended Mary Beard's method of dealing with it. Find out who they are, name and shame, and most effectively, tell their mum!

I see that to the threats of rape and murder, we now have bomb threats to a variety of female journalists, including one of my personal favourites, Hadley Freeman, who has quite rightly reported this to the police. My DD and many of her friends have enlisted their mums to join them in the twitter fightback so that this space does not become an all male province. I love the way that Mary Beard has retweeted some of the worst offenders and named and shamed.

And through all the abuse, Caroline Criado-Perez reminds us why the misogynists got their knickers in a twist, the silly buggers
