What is the purpose of prison.

1. To punish
2. To Deter
3. To lessen re-offending
4. To protect the public
5. To rehabilitate
6. To educate
7. To train
8. To detox (hollow laugh - if they are not addicted when they go in.....'
9. None of the above
10. All of the above.

I wish we had a poll facility so that people could express their opinions anonymously, but I am willing to state mine publicly.

Several facts bother me. Black men are more likely to be remanded in custody, found guilty and given custodial sentences for the same offence as white men. Once in prison, they are more likely to be put on disciplinary charges and less likely to be offered education or training. They are disproportionately represented in the prison population. One possible reason is that they are statistically far more likely to be subject to 'stop and search' - if the same number of white men were searched it is quite likely that many more of them would be charged.

I am also bothered by the fact that many prisoners have mental health problems, learning difficulties, drug/alcohol addiction, and have been in 'care' or the armed forces.

My facts are gleaned from the Home Office's own statistics.

Studies have shown that one of the best ways to lessen re-offending is to help prisoners to keep in touch with their families - but many are sent to prisons far away from their homes.

I am claustrophobic and the thought of spending up to 18 hours a day in a locked cell makes me break out in a sweat, without the addition of total lack of dignity.

It costs more to keep somebody in prison than to fund detox programmes or remedial education.

Of course, there are people who need to be kept incarcerated because they pose a danger to others. However, I believe that there are many thousands of people in prison for minor offences who do not belong there. Decriminalising all drugs would be a big help, as would total reform of the care system and provision for ex members of the armed forces.

I regard some of the practices in US jails to be inhumane and uncivilised but I fear the UK has its share of unacceptable practices. After all, most other European countries manage to lock up a much smaller proportion of their citizens.

Greatnan Sun 15-Jul-12 18:41:42

It's Sunday - I have had an automatic reply but I don't expect any action. I don't mind - I just felt I had to express my opinion. Does anyone agree with me?

Nonu Sun 15-Jul-12 18:38:13

Nonu Sun 15-Jul-12 18:33:33

What mine Greatnan?

Greatnan Sun 15-Jul-12 18:27:04

Of course not, Jeni, there is only one person whose remarks I found offensive.

jeni Sun 15-Jul-12 18:23:13

What mine?

Greatnan Sun 15-Jul-12 18:09:59

I have taken great exception to the inference that any of us have a prurient interest in body searches and I have, therefore, reported that post.

I don't think you need to have first-hand experience of the prison service or, indeed, of being in prison to recognise that there are far too many prisoners who are not a danger to society and who should not be incarcerated, that illiteracy and innumeracy are disproportionately higher than in the rest of the population and that drug addiction is a serious issue. These are all things that need to be tackled but dealing with them properly costs money and takes commitment –not a vote-winner in the eyes of most politicians. That is where the real problem lies not in the nuts and bolts of the precise method for preventing visiting orifices from transporting drugs – not a discussion that I find at all erotic, by the way.

Nonu Sun 15-Jul-12 17:35:53

Some do , so I am led to believe

jeni Sun 15-Jul-12 17:21:58

Not unless you have very lax vaginal muscles!

Nonu Sun 15-Jul-12 17:16:56

What goes up must come down grin

jeni Sun 15-Jul-12 17:10:25

More difficult in women who have vaginal foreign bodies inserted.

Nonu Sun 15-Jul-12 17:08:47

Certainly can by Customs and Excise {although that is the old fashioned term now } usually they wait for nature to take it"s course though.

I suspect alldoomandgloom just likes a good fight. No holds barred, body punches and ad hominem personal attacks a speciality. Good manners conspicuous by their absence.

If is wasn't about this, it would be about something else. No point giving any other examples or references, he/she is never wrong and would never recognise anyone else's knowledge or experience as being relevant.

glammanana Sun 15-Jul-12 16:56:17

Oh dearitsalldoomandgloom how insulting are you ? we are all entitled to our opinioms and the data from the web site proves that personal searches can be made by anyone in authority, and it is not GNers who are going on about fantasies if you care to re-read the posts but yourself, don't for one moment think we are all a group of sit at home grans a vast majority of us have a lot of experience with different careers and you are certainly not being very forum friendly.

jeni Sun 15-Jul-12 16:26:39

The BMA guidelines are on the web if anyone is interested. Interestingly it seems to state they do not have to be performed by a doctor!

dorsetpennt Sun 15-Jul-12 16:14:32

Gosh Itsalldoomandgloom you don't like people to either disagree with you or even perhaps present their own views and ideas. This is only a forum after all - maybe some of us are not as experienced as you say you are, but are perfectly entitled to air their views/ideas . Getting personal and name calling isn't what these forums are for, just an exchange of views.

I think there may be lines crossed here.
I am guessing that if someone is suspected of being a "drug mule" that has swallowed a condom or similar with a dangerous amount of drugs inside then every effort will be made to locate and extract the drugs.
This is not the same as a routine search.
But a) I am no expert and b) itsalletc you are being unnecessarily very rude to other posters. Some of them have a great deal of experience in the justice system.
