Been weening myself off gransnet due to other commitments but thought I'd just come back to have a quick look what was being said about last weekends malarky. What a disappointment. What's the matter with all of you? I can't believe there are no republicans in gransnet - are they frighteneing to "come out"? Royalty is not compatible with democracy. full stop. The whole hereditary system is anti-democracy. Why aren't you all firing away?
Or have I missed a thread? if so, please direct me to it. Not the jubilee thread please - that made me feel sick......

The rest of the world is not living here! confused

johanna Sat 09-Jun-12 18:55:59

nanaej

HALF of the rest of the world.grin

JessM Sat 09-Jun-12 19:38:50

Do you mean they would like to johanna?

johanna Sat 09-Jun-12 19:57:06

Well, yes and no jess
It does seem that half of the rest of the world is already here.
In the early eighties the Arabs bought up half of London, forgot who did the nineties. And then the Russians in 2000-2010, and now the Chinese.

I am certainly not talking about the people from the Commonwealth, or the old colonies. And there are many of them as well.

All those folk must think we are a very democratic country, monarchy or not?

Oh for heaven's sake!

Is it so wrong to enjoy an occasion?

Haven't read whole thread. In process of getting grandkids to bed.

This seems so u nnecessary though. hmm

nanaej Sat 09-Jun-12 20:33:13

I enjoy lots of occasions..just chose not to celebrate Elizabeth Windsor's 60 years of waving! Did not stop anyone else from doing so, respect others' right to like the queen. Would like that to be reciprocal, s'all!

j04 Sat 09-Jun-12 20:45:21

Can anyone actually remember what was said on the jubilee threads?

I'm buggered if I can.

Anagram Sat 09-Jun-12 21:01:00

You can always read them again, jingl.
I think those of us who wanted to contributed to those threads; it's only fair that the other side get to have their say, too!

j04 Sat 09-Jun-12 21:26:05

yawn

Anagram Sat 09-Jun-12 21:35:40

Yes, it must be tiring...

johanna Sat 09-Jun-12 21:37:58

jo4

No yawning, this is serious.confused

j04 Sat 09-Jun-12 21:43:46

yeah. right.

Do carry on without me. smile

nanaej Sat 09-Jun-12 21:46:59

Isn't that what Marie Antoinette said? grin

Anagram Sat 09-Jun-12 21:49:07

And Edward VII. grin

johanna Sat 09-Jun-12 21:53:42

Oh, fabulous
Let them eat cake!

Or is it bread and circuses?

Joking apart though it is a very serious subject.

Anagram Sat 09-Jun-12 21:55:10

Is it? Why?

JessM Sat 09-Jun-12 22:07:58

well it was until you brought in the rest of the world Johanna - maybe they came here to make money, those rich people you were referring to. But London property and just sit back.
We were trying to discuss a political subject Jing NOT talk about the jubilee, which I recall had about 12 threads on the one subject!

johanna Sat 09-Jun-12 22:47:39

anagram
It is serious , because to replace a Monarch with a Head of State ain't going to change anything!

Anyone who is really interested in the future of the country should concentrate on education!

Jacey Sat 09-Jun-12 23:01:42

12 jessM ???? shock ...I must have missed most of them! confused

However ...I , for one, appreciated the fact that most GNetters did not interrupt the threads were some of us were enjoying sharing the celebrations! flag ...with about 17 million other television viewers.

And so I too respect other's right to voice their views on creating a republic.

However ...this thread seems to be more of a debate? confused

So ...my two pennuth would be that I would hate to have an elected president with the rights of those in countries such as USA or France.hmm

Anagram Sat 09-Jun-12 23:04:01

johanna, I have no wish to replace the Monarchy at all - I'm quite happy with the status quo. I was merely pointing out to jingl that we've all had our say on the Jubilee threads and that this one's for the republicans.

POGS The Russian system allows, even encourages someone like Putin to become president, ditto the America system and George W. and the North Korean system and the Kim Jong dynasty. The Irish system, however, is set up completely differently so there is no possibility of such figures becoming president. Our own existing system allowed recent Prime Ministers to become more presidential in style and it is time that the Commons exerted a bit more control over the Government. That is its role, after all. A head of state without political power – whether a queen as now or a president – would make no difference.

absentgrana Sun 10-Jun-12 09:45:48

JessM I think there is a rule about the monarch's not co-operating with the PM. He/she has to abdicate.

j04 Sun 10-Jun-12 09:51:27

Well, maybe if carbon hadn't made such remarks as, "last weekend's malarky" and "not the jubilee thread, that made me sick", I wouldn't have felt the need to post at all.

Why not start the thread without referring to previous posts?

j04 Sun 10-Jun-12 09:52:26

Do continue to discuss something that is never going to happen in our lifetime.

grin

Elegran Sun 10-Jun-12 09:53:41

So a bloodyminded PM could see off a monarch , as in the "To Play the King" section of "House of Cards" and probably oust an entire monarchy
