Interesting article. I really hope Obama gets re-elected but I think, like the rest of us, he has been misled on this issue. I think the truth is slowly beginning to filter through. That's good and makes me more optimisitic about the future of humanity.

Rebranding of Global Warming

Oldgreymare Sat 16-Jun-12 10:35:40

Mine too!

jeni Tue 12-Jun-12 20:41:49

And mine,.

Bags Tue 12-Jun-12 20:14:17

I don't suppose pollution does anything any good, so I agree about stopping it, ogm. Next step is agree what counts as pollution, I suppose. Certainly the plastic litter in the oceans and on the beaches counts as pollution in my book.

Oldgreymare Tue 12-Jun-12 20:08:23

Interesting article Bags (see post 18th May). Rather patronising tho' reference Eastern/Western mindsets.
I'm 'Western' but certainly do not 'blame' only the increase in Co2 for the changes that may be occurring ( note use of 'may'!) There are so many other potential possible causes altho' that does seem to be the main 'culprit'.
I totally agree with your later post:
'..what we don't yet understand about Earth's chaotic climate system is several orders of magnitude larger than we think we know'.
With this in mind I agree with Jeni about conserving non renewable resources, and would dare to go a step further by suggesting that we stop polluting our air, our seas, our land as that cannot possibly do us any good.

nanaej Tue 12-Jun-12 20:07:38

jeni we have lit the wood burner again confused

Anagram Tue 12-Jun-12 19:45:39

There are scientists on both sides of the argument, anyway.

Bags Tue 12-Jun-12 19:40:39

I haven't got the impression that anyone on GN is saying, or even implying, that they know better than "the scientists". Some scientists are saying a, b, and c; other scientists are saying x, y, and z. In the noble tradition of debate within the rigours of the scientific method, things are still being hammered out that are not fully understood yet. I think it's quite exciting, especially as new things are being discovered that incrementally increase understanding all the time smile

jeni Tue 12-Jun-12 19:27:12

nanaej I totally agree!
Global warming or not (says she with her heating on in June!) we should be conserving non renewable resources.

Annobel Tue 12-Jun-12 19:24:10

carbon, it's my understanding that the dinosaurs were wiped out by a meteorite causing the equivalent of a nuclear winter - an event it would be hard to prepare for.

j04 Tue 12-Jun-12 19:01:39

I don't understand why people get so worked up about their own view that global warming is not happening.

Nobody's blaming them personally.

confused

nanaej Tue 12-Jun-12 18:59:50

Think the reality is that natural resources e.g. coal /oil etc are not infinite so alternative energy will be required if the populous wants to continue at same rate with current heating /lighting/transport. That in itself is enough to make me think twice B4 using a car, booking a plane flight, etc etc.

Also landfill /plastics etc I am happy to take a simplistic view..it is not pleasant to cover vast areas with crap!

soop Tue 12-Jun-12 18:41:17

carbon confused You seem stressed. You have your point of view and Bags has hers. No need to get shirty!

carboncareful Tue 12-Jun-12 15:00:53

Also can't help think: why do you all think you know better than the scientists? (and I don't mean the scientists employed by the oil industry)

carboncareful Tue 12-Jun-12 14:58:36

Can't help thinking: if the dinosaurs had prepared for change perhaps they wouldn't have been wiped out ! Think about it.

gangy5 Sun 10-Jun-12 16:58:43

Yes, I tend to think it's all bollocks also. The globe has gone through many changes from Ice Age to more temperate climes. This has been an ongoing trend since inception and temperature change will carry on into the far off future or until we're blown to kingdom come. There is always going to be change and there is nothing new in that.

carboncareful Sun 10-Jun-12 16:21:03

I'm still here but don't have much time these days.
I think you should beware of these sort of websites funded by the oil companies.

On the masterresource site I notice they recommend the book "Atlas Shrugged" (by Ayn Rand). This is one of the most evil books ever written. It is used as a sort of bible for the far right in America. I forced myself to read it and I can assure you it really is evil - evil in intent.
Any organisation that recommends this book is immediate suspect - anything they have to say is going to be based on the totally selfish philosophy of "objectivism". Try looking that on up. Think Tea Party ! That book really is their bible.

bags I really can't believe you would want to be associated with this sort of thing. You must be more discriminating about what you look at on the internet - there is a lot of horrible evil stuff out there. Also a lot of people out to get Obama - they will say anything, make up anything the get rid.
Do we want to end up with a magic underpants wearing Mormon in charge?????

Gotta go. feeling sick

Yes pammygram. People lived where the North sea is now, we were joined to France, In the park here they have an area that was tropical with shells from goodness knows how long ago. I really think it is money raising con. People back then walked to somewhere else if the climate changed, flooding, cliffs falling in sea. Now we have private land and a huge population so we can't move very easily and there are less places to go and start up again so we are trapped. There has always been climate change but our pollution, and use of resources is another thing and set by those in power we can only do our little bit. I was trying to stop all this after reading 'Silent Spring' in my youth I thought I could change things.

jeni Fri 18-May-12 21:29:48

Ariadne Fri 18-May-12 21:29:34

Hi Pammy! Don't encourage them!

Though, mentioning global warming, where is carboncareful these days?

Bags Fri 18-May-12 21:28:43

Flattered, I'm sure! smile

Like this on the meteorologist, Roger Pielke Senior's blog today

a guest Post By Kiminori Itoh who is  Professor in the Graduate School for Environment and Information Sciences, Yokohama National University, Yokohama, Japan

about the psychology of the narrow alarmist mindset.

Bags Fri 18-May-12 15:58:59

A lot of people think they have the facts already, and there lies the problem. But there are plenty of books, papers and news being published every day which suggest that what we don't yet understand about Earth's chaotic climate system is several orders of magnitude larger than what we think we do know. Hubris, I call it.

pammygran Fri 18-May-12 15:53:09

Hi Bags...good to meet you..I am new to Gransnet..think its brilliant BUT come on girls lets get ANGRY..we may be Grandmas, but we have a really important voice...so called climate change is something we can debate, we need the facts.
