I'm going to be at DD's house near Glasgow 14-23 March and wondered if anyone fancied meeting up then. I've never been to a meet up in Glasgow so maybe if anyone has and knows a good venue they could say where would be good.

I'll bump too Marydoll

Marydoll Thu 17-Feb-22 09:07:19

Getting closer, bridie!

I'm struggling to remember the name of the lady from Troon, who was keen to come.?

We really are a friendly bunch Fanny you would be so welcome to join in with the blethering and laughs.

FannyCornforth Thu 17-Feb-22 11:40:09

Oh thank you Kaluthanks How nice

I’m not certain if our accents would be compatible though ?
Mary and I might have to communicate through the use of mini whiteboards and pens!

Marydoll Thu 17-Feb-22 11:50:50

Cheeky besom!

I will have you know Kalu and I are very posh and can imitate a Kelvinside accent if necessary. Apologies to anyone, who lives in Kelvinside. I think there may actually be a poster, who lives there. blush

I don’t even know what a besom is sad

Is it a cross between a bison and a bosom?

Gwyneth Thu 17-Feb-22 13:40:07

The mind boggles Fanny ?

Gwyneth Thu 17-Feb-22 13:41:21

I hope you all have a wonderful meet up. Sounds like it will be hilarious.

Marydoll Thu 17-Feb-22 14:04:44

Fanny just in case you get the wrong end of the stick. The meaning has changed over the years.
My mother used to call mr a besom. Draw your own conclusions.

A Scots term whose definition has grown broader over time, it initially referred to immoral women.

Contemporary usage of the term tends to be more lighthearted, and is more synonymous with someone with a bit of attitude, ie. “ya cheeky wee besom.”

Kalu Thu 17-Feb-22 14:39:02

Oh that Marydoll is such a besom! If said with a smile, it is an endearment!?. Anyone who is largish in the chest area could possibly be a cheeky bison. ?

Love the auto correct change from besom to bison.?

Marydoll Thu 17-Feb-22 14:44:53

You really need to visualise me with my arms crossed across my ample besooms, to get the full effect!

You could substitute the word bugger Fanny. You could say "cheeky we bugger" but in a lighthearted way.

Literally a besom is a broomstick (A witches broomstick) ,during a surge in handfasting ceremonies here in the early noughties the happy couple would jump over the besom after being handfasted ... bound together with their tartans .Its a lovely wee ceremony and there are some fantastic celebrants who will perform it BUT dont tell your minister or priest that its a pagan ceremony as we've seen more than one minister refuse to be involved with it,even when it was pointed out that it was the tradition and not the religion they wanted in their wedding day .

Espee, I am shocked!? You would never hear me use such a word. ?

?. Easy to change keyboard to various languages, Scots, - a different foreign language altogether.

Baggs Thu 17-Feb-22 14:56:13

The Scottish mother of a schoolfriend of mine once called her second daughter (there were four of them and this was not my friend) a "glaiket besom" because she'd tipped a dustbin out onto the patio in a rage about something she'd lost.

Marydoll Thu 17-Feb-22 14:59:07

Baggs, I love that word glaikit. In my book, it on a par with scunnered!! They are not really translatable into English.

Grannmarie Thu 17-Feb-22 15:01:31

Oh, Baggs, that made me laugh out loud, I haven't heard glaiket in years!?

Baggs Thu 17-Feb-22 15:01:50

Agreed, mdoll! Scunnered is a favourite of mine too even though I probably can't do the accent justice ?

TillyTrotter Thu 17-Feb-22 15:03:39

I though a besom was a broom ? ?

Baggs Thu 17-Feb-22 15:04:35

Another fave is dicht (wipe). My Dundonian mil used to hand me a dichter when the kids' faces needed wiped.

It's that too.

Baggs Thu 17-Feb-22 15:06:07

My besom/broom (with another and a rake or two.

Marydoll Thu 17-Feb-22 15:53:22

My mother was always wabbit!
