I'm going to be at DD's house near Glasgow 14-23 March and wondered if anyone fancied meeting up then. I've never been to a meet up in Glasgow so maybe if anyone has and knows a good venue they could say where would be good.

Esspee

Love the auto correct change from besom to bison.?

?. Easy to change keyboard to various languages, Scots, - a different foreign language altogether.

I don’t even know what a besom is sad

Is it a cross between a bison and a bosom?

You could substitute the word bugger Fanny. You could say "cheeky we bugger" but in a lighthearted way.

Espee, I am shocked!? You would never hear me use such a word. ?

Literally a besom is a broomstick (A witches broomstick) ,during a surge in handfasting ceremonies here in the early noughties the happy couple would jump over the besom after being handfasted ... bound together with their tartans .Its a lovely wee ceremony and there are some fantastic celebrants who will perform it BUT dont tell your minister or priest that its a pagan ceremony as we've seen more than one minister refuse to be involved with it,even when it was pointed out that it was the tradition and not the religion they wanted in their wedding day .

You really need to visualise me with my arms crossed across my ample besooms, to get the full effect!

Oh that Marydoll is such a besom! If said with a smile, it is an endearment!?. Anyone who is largish in the chest area could possibly be a cheeky bison. ?

Marydoll Thu 17-Feb-22 14:04:44

Fanny just in case you get the wrong end of the stick. The meaning has changed over the years.
My mother used to call mr a besom. Draw your own conclusions.

A Scots term whose definition has grown broader over time, it initially referred to immoral women.

Contemporary usage of the term tends to be more lighthearted, and is more synonymous with someone with a bit of attitude, ie. “ya cheeky wee besom.”

I hope you all have a wonderful meet up. Sounds like it will be hilarious.

Cheeky besom!

I will have you know Kalu and I are very posh and can imitate a Kelvinside accent if necessary. Apologies to anyone, who lives in Kelvinside. I think there may actually be a poster, who lives there. blush

FannyCornforth Thu 17-Feb-22 11:40:09

Oh thank you Kaluthanks How nice

I’m not certain if our accents would be compatible though ?
Mary and I might have to communicate through the use of mini whiteboards and pens!

Kalu Thu 17-Feb-22 10:39:43
