Transferring ownership of our car…

Doing the transfer online is really straightforward. I sold my car to a very close friend who took care of it all and received the updated registration document within a few days.

I’ve just transferred my diesel car (ULEZ) to my GS it was very straight forward online very quick and straightforward.

If you transfer ownership on line, the DVLA site will take you through the entire process, even icluding reference to what the new owner should do. To do this, you will the new owner’s details, along with the 11-digit reference number found on the V5C. It's all very easy and straightforward.

Quite simple, I believe. I had one transferred to me - despite being a non-driver!

We did exactly the same for our youngest grandson. He is still driving it.

Being dinosaur's, my husband sent off the form from the 'log book' to transfer the car into my name. A new 'log book' was duly returned and we waited for the tax forms to arrive to take to the Post Office. After a couple of weeks nothing had happened so I went on line to find out why, and found the form. All done on line and, apart from my getting confused when another unrelated page pushed me to pay for a car registration check company, it was very easy.

Somehow having nothing but a confirmation email and nothing in paper didn't seem right though. I don't know how it's done if not on line.

I think NikDumpling that no one wants you to do anything that isn’t online. My DH would have done the same as yours and sent the log book off but he is gradually coming around to my having a go at most things online as I point out that you get automatic acknowledgements. When I renewed his driving license it gave us a reference number which allowed us to check the progress of the renewal. As it was taking a few weeks and we were going away in the car it was invaluable. Thank you so much for answering. Also the iPad is a great help !!!

I am waiting for my stepchildren to decide whether they want to keep their Dad’s car or want to sell it. I had to inform the insurance in order to put my son’s name on so he could get the MOT done, and their deadline now gives us a week.
Then there is the DVLA to deal with. I want them to take this on, as I don’t want to have to tax and insure it in my name for a short time.

Hope you have got things sorted out Cabbie. My grandson has just got the insurance sorted out so am transferring it online tomorrow (cross fingers). Then he will have to tax it before he can drive it. So am hoping that he receives a reference number to allow him to do that as he will have to wait for his log book to arrive. This new tax system is a nuisance. At one time you could transfer it to the new owner. Now they have to do it and you have to claim back ant tax left. I am told it’s because more tax is collected this way!!!!!

It’s done. Transferred with the ease you kind people told me it would be. Then it was discovered that there is a reference number (very small) on the green piece you cut off from the log book to give to the new owner. This allowed him to tax it. Hurrah! One very delighted grandson and grandparents who must get used to that empty space on the driveway. Feeling a bit odd at the moment.

Stepdaughter having said she wanted it, I hoped she would tax, insure etc, but she changed her mind, leaving us very little time within the 14 day insurance cut off. My son has put it up for auction. I just need it sorted asap. I shall have to extend the insurance, but I think I need to inform the DVLA? I just don’t need this, with the funeral on Wednesday.

So sorry Cabbie to hear of your troubles just when you have to deal with the funeral and have so many stresses and sorrow. You can reclaim any tax you have to pay before informing the DVLA. It sounds as if your son is handling things as best as possible. I do hope things get sorted as soon as poss. I have every possible sympathy with you.

I know that feeling. Can you take a screen shot of the reply email? At least you know it is done whereas snail Mail might leave you wondering.
