Do other people turn the fridge off when going on holiday? I can’t manage to reach the plug to switch it off at the socket.

No never.

Ladyleftfieldlover Tue 30-Jun-26 20:40:10

Why would you do that?

Desdemona Tue 30-Jun-26 20:45:45

The fridge is about the only electrical item I DO leave on. I try to make sure everything will be in date when I get back (not always successfully!)

Not that I go on trips of more than a few days now.

no I never have, when we did go on holiday, but don't go now...

MartavTaurus Tue 30-Jun-26 20:56:56

No never, I'm away for 2 months at a time.
I sometimes have random people staying at mine, so I don't want them fiddling with the appliances.

Not "dodgy" random, I mean various people I know and trust!

We did, years ago, and used to drain down the water system, too, but it’s not something we’ve done for decades now. In fact, I’d forgotten we used to do that until I saw this thread!

Have never thought of doing this . There is always something inside that needs refrigeration while we are away.

Would you turn your freezer off when you went away? If not, why turn your fridge off?

In the days when electrical wiring was less safe than nowadays and appliance electrics ditto there might have been some point in it, but it is something I have never done, at least for a holiday.

When we had a holiday home where we were leaving the house empty for month at a time, we did turn off power and water when we left, but when we were in the holiday home for periods up to a fortnight we never turned anything off in our permanent home.

I have never turned the fridge off either………checked everything was in date and not left anything that might ‘fester’ but never turned it off completely.
I do unplug everything else though……lamps, desktop computer, sewing machines, etc and check every sink tap is turned off properly, scoop of washing soda down plug holes and outside drain.

No we leave it on.
This post immediately swept me back to an early Michael MacIntyre sketch about going on holiday.
We switch everything off . . . but not the fridge. We trust the fridge!

MandL Wed 01-Jul-26 08:04:50

That was exactly my first thought too, Mollygo 😂
Some of his early stuff was brilliant!

Samsara1 Wed 01-Jul-26 09:48:55

No no please don't it will be all smelly when you come back.

tabbie Wed 01-Jul-26 12:54:05

I agree it will smell.
We went to a holiday let in May and were the first guests in this year.
The fridge stank.
The caretaker said it had been switched off all winter.

Twopence it is unnecessary to turn your fridge off when you are on holiday.
If you were to decide to do that you would need to empty it completely, clean the inside to ensure traces of food
are not left, then leave the door open .
Absolutely no need to switch your fridge off.

Judy54 Wed 01-Jul-26 13:48:11

Not something I have ever done, however a friend of ours went away on holiday and there was a power cut so she lost all the contents of her fridge and freezer on her return. The smell when she walked through the door was appalling.

Wheniwasyourage Wed 01-Jul-26 14:12:16

We turn off the fridge if we're away for a couple of weeks or more, but do leave it standing open so that it doesn't go mouldy. We also turn off and unplug most electrical equipment and the router and unplug the TV aerial in case of lightning. It may be overkill, but it keeps us happy.

I never turn my fridge off. I’m going away soon, admittedly not for very long, but I am leaving, butter, cheese, eggs, fruit, and an unopened pack of ham, yogurt, milk - all of which will still be in date, and things like jam, ginger purée, mayonnaise etc.

Fallingstar Wed 01-Jul-26 14:27:25

No we don’t turn the fridge off. Can’t recall if we ever did though it sounds like something my old mum would recommend.

TerriBull Wed 01-Jul-26 14:38:30

Not something that would occur, but in the recesses of my memory, I think it may have been an onerous task my parents might have done. I've vague recollection of the fridge being defrosted as a precursor to going away. They generally liked to add another layer of difficulty to life wherever possible. hmm Now I'm pondoring on that, a wise move or an overthink confused Too much of a kerfuffle though when trying to remember everything else with going away.

JdotJ Wed 01-Jul-26 14:45:27

No, its not 1974

MT62 Wed 01-Jul-26 17:42:51

No just clean it. For what it costs to run it why bother.
Plus you then have to wait for it to cool down, to put in the milk that I ‘had forgotten to get’ on my way back from the airport 😩

Nandalot Wed 01-Jul-26 17:51:21

When we were young and very green, (students), we emptied the fridge and turned it off. We didn’t know you should keep the door wedged open and came back to a mouldy mess.
