You have received a windfall ...

... not huge but let's say several thousand.

You have decided to spend it on future proofing your old, or even older age. What would you spend it on? It can be on you (eyes, teeth, hearing, mobility), your home etc., but it should be something/s that helps you protect your physical mobility, mental well-being, personal autonomy and independence going forward.

I think I would add moving towards a gardener, perhaps getting help to make things easier later so your/my costs are down later.

Turn our outside working toilet into an inside toilet.

When my DH had a hip operation and could not managed the stairs, I realised how important it is to have a downstairs toilet.

Oh that’s a fab one! We have an outside loo attached to the terrace in which we live. Next doom have cleverly turned theirs into a shower room and loo.

Yes, we have no inside downstairs loo, may I add this to my list please?

Definitely an electric awning. In the heatwaves of this year's Summer I felt like I was living underground as I had to leave blinds shut and curtains pulled to stop the heat coming in through my balcony windows and patio door.
I get full sun from late morning to late afternoon🌞☀️🌞☀️

I would replace my ageing car, which is unlikely to 'see me through'.
Also have my shower updated to a self contained electric one. My current one, over the bath, runs off the tap water system and alternates between hot and freezing cold every minute or so, despite many plumber visits.

We looked at getting our downstairs loo merged with the broom cupboard next to it and made into a shower room, but were quoted £30k because of plumbing and other situational issues. We reckoned that a stair lift would be cheaper and easier if it became necessary, but I now wonder whether the chap who quoted just didn’t fancy doing it for some reason.

If I had a windfall and could be bothered, I would get more quotes and look at having it done - probably made into a wet room with a loo, if that’s possible - in case of temporary incapacity. If either of us were unable to get upstairs on a permanent basis we would probably move to a single storey place, though.

Teeth is my next big expenditure. I've had one successful implant and now want to dispense with the annoying part denture and have some more. I have already booked an appointment.
When does the windfall arrive? 😅😂🤣

Fingers crossed from me that you get a windfall & can do this spore

I like the idea of this windfall but have recently realised that a "small windfall" isn't really enough to make the changes I was hoping for.

I know we will have a mid-sized windfall coming from my mother-in-law's estate (eventually) but really the changes required to make things really good for the future are far more costly than I expected.

If I was to have say, the £8,000 offered earlier, I know it would easily disappear just on repairs.
🤷‍♀️

I’m torn between a gardener , although that’s in the future . DH likes doing the lawn and hedges atm . And aircon . Our bedroom is east facing and our kitchen /dining/living area is south facing .

Easy. Hip replacement, both hips. What a difference it would make.

Jaxjacky Tue 20-Oct-26 12:08:22

Personal trainer/physio, fully knowledgeable about hips and dislocation to help get me back to reasonable fitness.
I’m floundering, confidence knocked.

I've long wanted a PA. Would this money be enough to pay for one? Someone to help with sorting out car/house insurance, take the car for it's MOT, help tidy up paperwork, etc. And occasionally cook me a meal. And do some ironing. (I never do any so things are creased)
Also, I've always wanted a gold necklace. And maybe the air conditioning mentioned above is a good idea if next summer is as hot as this one was.

Several years ago, out of the blue, I got a small unexpected windfall from a distant relative who I hadn’t seen for more than 40 years. I was very touched and quite teary about it. It went towards some house renovations . I was left it in his will. Life’s a funny old thing at times.

I would replace our metal single paned windows with new triple glazed windows. I applied to the local council for a warm home grant, but they are currently over subscribed.

I bought an auto- mower (£399) and it mows our lawn. Still need to tidy the edges. But no clippings to deal with. God send!

avitorl Tue 20-Oct-26 13:58:17

Trying to get a good gardener where I live is practically impossible but fingers crossed, I have one coming to give me a quote tomorrow.
I'm also having to wait until December to get air conditioning Quotes.I'm determined to have it fitted before next summer as this year was unbearable.
I have enough money to fund the things that would improve my life but still haven't been able to get them!

Grammaretto Tue 20-Oct-26 13:58:32

I was on a waiting list for over 2 years for my new hip on the NHS Margs . That was nearly 2 years ago.
I am very pleased with it. No windfall was required.

Have monthly pedicures, manicures etc as I’m finding it getting more difficult to cut my nails and general foot health

Katekeeprunning Tue 20-Oct-26 14:06:58

I think hearing. My husband has bad hearing even with hearing aids. He misses out so much in conversation and can ask a question that has just been discussed.

I had to have a downstairs shower room converted to level access shower some years ago - but the room is an 'add on to the house and I'm sure it isn't innsulated as it is always really cold. I'd get insulation for sure. I'm sure £8k would do it (it's a small room)

glammagran Tue 20-Oct-26 14:45:08

grandMattie

A new ceramic hob. Mine is cracked and I’m saving to replace it.

New kitchen floor, torn when the old washing machine was removed. It’s nit dangerous, but unsightly.

“Net curtain” blinds for the living room…

When we first moved into our house there was a ceramic hob but I didn’t like it at all. We got a gas hob but hated cleaning it.

2 years ago we bought an induction cooker and we absolutely love it. You can heat things very quickly if you choose and you can adjust the temperature in an instant so things don’t boil over. You can have it set low so food just stays warm, choose a simmer setting to suit or boil rapidly.

pluckyluckyme Tue 20-Oct-26 14:46:48

Teeth. I have missing teeth . I would have implants or if my jaw cannot take that, the most comfortable and best partial dentures possible.

JamesandJon33 Tue 20-Oct-26 14:49:05

I’d get a tree surgeon in to sort out all our trees.

ReadyMeals Tue 20-Oct-26 14:49:29

Someone mentioned ironing! I thought ironing stopped when no one in the household still has to wear shirt and tie to work!

LizH13 Tue 20-Oct-26 14:53:41

I would love a downstairs loo. The only possibility would be to convert part of the integral garage, but as DH uses it as a workshop for his bikes, that isn’t going to happen 🤦‍♀️. Therefore I’d use it for an awning over our south facing patio door, this year made me realise it would make sense!
