Vacuum cleaner recommendations - urgent 😄

Dear helpful grans, my not very trusty Dyson stick cleaner has broken. It's quite old now and I think the cost of repair would not be worth it.

I no longer have a second back up and need another urgently as my house is on the market and I have 3 viewings this week.

I've been trawling online but everything good quality seems very expensive. One Miele is over £600!

I live on 3 floors so would prefer not too heavy which probably rules out a Henry .

I see it's possible to buy reconditioned VCs. Has anyone tried these?

If I move to a bungalow I guess a heavier model would be fine
It's such a pest happening today!

Shark I have three. One on each floor. Light weight. Great guarantee as it’s five years. Great after care service.

Thanks. There are so many models to choose from! Where to start.🫨
I am veering towards Shark as DD swears by hers.

Light weight & fold to get under the beds & sideboards. Also you can use it as a handheld for stairs.
I have two Dyson sticks as well but they conk out after literally 5 mins on full power. They don’t bend either.
I refuse to pay half a grand for one of their better ones & guarantee is rubbish on the dyson.
Very sometimes have great deals on Shark & next day delivery too.

There was another thread on here a week ago, or so.
One of the grans Henry had died a death.
Lidls had one in today £139.

All I would say is check that it's not too heavy to push. I recently bought a Shark as there were a lot of good reviews but I find it hard work. I wish I had bought another Vax (OH vacuumed up hot ashes - he's says by mistake)

What do you find hard work about it?

Henry is in my under-stairs cupboard.

Once you move, Grammaretto I expect you will have more plug sockets which will make it easy to look at a robot hoover - the sort that self-empty.
I love mine ♥️ even though it means a plug socket is pretty much permanently unavailable.

There's a plug-in Henry stick cleaner on sale for £99 which I'm about to buy to replace my Dyson stick cleaner. It has bags which makes emptying better.

NotSpaghetti Tue 02-Jun-26 17:03:46

Has anyone checked the weight/balance of the stick Henry please?

NotSpaghetti Tue 02-Jun-26 17:06:06

Oh I see the £99 one has a cord - so will undoubtedly be lighter...

For your immediate purpose Asda have a number of light, inexpensive cylinder vacuums.

I don't know if you use Amazon, but they sell "open box" items, often at almost half price, and guaranteed to be as good as new.

Whatever you decide on, it may be worth seeing if you can get it for a bargain price.

Great suggestion!!

I can honestly say and I am very fussy and had several vacuums in my married life but for me you can't beat the
G TechAir Ram Grammaretto. It's very efficient, very light and you can zoom around the house/stairs in no time. I love mine. At the moment GTech themselves have very good bargains, others may well do too. Have a look I would say!

I took my dad’s cordless Vax stick vacuum when he died and it was such a revelation that I’ve since bought a cordless lawnmower and strimmer 🙄

M0nica Wed 03-Jun-26 14:41:50

I have had 2 stick vacuums and, uite simply cannot get on with them. I find them unbalanced and won't go under beds.

pce612 Wed 03-Jun-26 14:48:34

Try a Shark lift away. More powerful than the cordless stick model, which is also excellent. Comes with a really good attachment for stairs, which you put on the hose and then detach the motor and dust catcher from the base so you can carry it up the stairs easily.
Just about every bit is available as spares. I have a spare set of filters which I swap when washing out the dirty ones.
I had Dysons before but the Sharks are much much better.

Jess20 Wed 03-Jun-26 14:49:08

Shark, often offers available online.

I don't think I have ever been so delighted with a household item in my life as I am with my robot vacuum cleaner. It's transformed my life, as I have a painful back condition. It's so absolutely brilliant. I think I've fallen in love with my robot. 😁

MissAdventure Wed 03-Jun-26 15:55:30

I've just had a new (secondhand) robot delivered today.
They're a real boon!

4allweknow Wed 03-Jun-26 16:13:20

Had 2 Dyson sticks and they don't seem to last, fed up having to get new batteries. Have a Shark stick now and it nearly lifts the carpet off the floor. Good on hard surfaces too.

Look at Sebo.
They are upright vacuum cleaners.
John Lewis stock them.
They have excellent reviews and the one I have is about 12 years old and still going strong and cleaning well with no issues
A bonus is that they have all the additional tools stored on them.
The only downside is that it is rather heavy.

I love Sebo. They haven't evolved in decades (at least 40) as they are so efficient and all the major hotel chains use them as they as so easy to maintain

Henry for sale in Lidls £139 I don’t know if that cheap or not!

MT62 Wed 03-Jun-26 17:33:07

Friend has the sebo cylinder vac. I had a go. I think it’s cumbersome. The bag takes ages to fill up, so that tells me it doesn’t pick up as well as my Shark cordless which I empty every other day. I’ve no kids or pets.
