Cleaning of shower screen

I take the shower off the holder, turn it to hot and rinse the screen doors down well. Clean once a week with soapy sponge, use old toothbrush round screws etc.

I use Method on the tiles, but on the glass I just squeegee the excess water and the wipe it down with a microfibre cloth. No streaks.

SueDonim , thanks for your question. It has never a problem , I direct the spray onto the glass and that is where it goes! Has never been a problem.

Your shower sounds like my DHs, always has pink marks.
Discovered its caused by the soap bars he uses. I like body shower wash and never have problem with pink marks on the tray. By the way, DH cleans his own shower - I resigned!

I have had a screen for years and the only thing you have to do to keep it pristine is wipe it down after showering straight away.
This also applies to the tiles round the shower.
You need two cloths one for taking off the water and scum, when that's done buff up with the dry cloth. No chemicals needed.
I had my shower put in in 2008 and the bathroom looks as new.
The big problem is no one wants to do the cleaning straight away and leave it and there is a build up of scum and that's the problem it's then difficult to get off.

My bathroom screen is Ideal Standard - and never gets limescale, thankfully. The shower room cubicle, though, is a limescale collector - very annoying.

I wouldn't consider using airborne sprays that I'd breathe in, so I scrub it (sometimes) with shaving foam on a scourer - while I'm in there - then rinse it down. Hot vinegar works well too.

Shouldn't your shower screen be held on with screws AskAlice, sealant is just for sealing any gaps.

Oreo, I obviously don't know how long you've had your shower screen, but I used to do the same as you and you anti-scale and anti-mould on the grooves down the side of the bit that held the shower screen. After about 3 years, I went to open the screen (it swings outwards from the bath) and the whole thing came away and toppled off. Luckily I was able to support it (and boy, was it heavy!) so it didn't break into a million pieces on the bathroom floor. The buy who came to fix it back said that the strong chemicals I had been using had broken down the sealant that was holding it in place and advised me not to use them on the fitments, just on the glass. Just saying...

I wipe with a screen wiper after every single shower. No make at all. Occasionally see a vague discolouration (strangely, it is PINK!) in corners of shower cubicle. I then spray immediately with mould and mildew remover. That seems to work for me.

My Dh has been using the Mr Muscle stuff on the shower but now the shower base has gone slimy. 🤢

How do you avoid getting the spray on yourself, Shelflife?

Mr Muscle advanced shower screen. I have a walk in shower , when you have finished your shower, spray the wet glass screens liberally with Mr Muscle . Don't wait spray immediately while you are still in the buff!! Never wipe with a cloth or use a blade - simply spray and leave!!

A shower squeegee after every shower. I’m lucky though, the sun doesn’t shine on my screen.

All this is enough to put me off shower screens. I have a wet room, but if ever I had a separate shower, I'd hang a curtain made of fine tight woven cotton , and hang it on old trouser hangers so easily taken down and washed.

I got a shower squeegee from Lakeland which is flat on one side and curved on the other as our shower has a curved door. I just use this once a day after the last person has showered and it works a treat.

Shower sprays after showering, then just walk away.
Once a week I use Mr Muscle anti limescale on the grooves leave for a while then brush with an old toothbrush, all the dirt then rinses away.Also once a week I use Mr Muscle black mould treatment on any mould that dares to appear, just spray and walk away.Easy and keeps it all sparkly.

The answer depends on whether you have hard or soft water, and on what the shower screen is made of,

If you have hard water you will need to use either household vinegar in warm water to dissolve the lime deposit left on the screen or acetic acid in warm water, then polish the screen with a dry tea towel or a sheet of newspaper. In other words as you do your windows.

If the screen is not made of glass, contact the seller and ask what it can be cleaned with, as vinegar, ascetic acid or salts of lemon may damage it.

In soft water areas, wiping the screen after use with a dry cloth should be sufficient. BUT everyone in the household needs to remember to do this!

Whatever you do START NOW!! We have had our shower screens for a good 20 years now and the limescale is caked on. Since I've been retired I've treated it daily with all the different chemicals and other "magic" methods recommended by "experts" all over the internet and in magazines and newspapers.

Despite using gallons of vinegar and even some very strong chemicals and all kinds of scouring equipment over the past few years, it still has a coating of limescale, very visible when the sun shines.

The only way to keep it clean would have been to dry it off thoroughly after each use and keep it dry (tell that to three strapping lads who were still living at home for some of the time).

Also I got some lotus effect treatment, which makes the surface impervious to water, which should just pour away. However, I haven't been able to clean off the limescale enough to apply this yet.

If I had a new shower, I would spray that on from the start. You may also be able to get it done professionally.

I don’t spray it with anything, just run the shower squeegee down it after getting showered and it’s fine.

We use a rubber blade immediately after using the shower. Nothing else needed.

I also use a shower/window scraper (I buy mine from Lakeland) to remove excess water and wipe the glass down with a dry microfibre cloth before getting out of the shower - it takes seconds. I've had my shower screen for 10 years and never used any spray on it, it still looks good.

Lakeland sell Wet and Forget which you spray on once a week and then just wash off, leaving it to dry clean and streak free. It’s in their sale at the moment. It has no chemicals. I’ve just ordered one to try.

Also since using the after shower spray I've found that I do not have a problem with the seals getting discoloured and mucky as someone up thread commented. There is no poking around with cotton buds etc. The spray takes care of that too.

I’ve been using Method on the inside and find it very successful. I used to have scale marks and have to give a good scrub weekly. Now using it after every shower, I haven’t had to scrub for weeks.
