We have had so many threads on this subject - only recently there was another one. As Audi10 has asked again, the problem is obviously still not solved. My tuppence worth on the subject is that the results vary among people using the same method because it depends on the windows and the dirt. If your windows are new, they will be easier to clean than old ones which may have be one porous over time. There are, no doubt, varying qualities of glass, too.
And what makes your windows dirty will depend on whether you live in an agricultural or industrial area, and what type of agriculture or industry they are.
Washing the windows before you polish them seems to be a good idea, as grande tante describes, and also, doing them frequently will probably make it easier, too. I have not found the right solution, and often put it off because the result never satisfies me. Also the mirrors in the bathroom - I think they look perfect, then next time they steam up, they have smears in directions I never wiped them in!

Go and live in Singapore, nobody cleans the outside of windows nor cars for that matter..... it rains , and I mean RAINS, every afternoon about 3 pm for around 5- 10 mins. Result very clean windows. If considering the move I have to say it is also around 30C morning, noon and night
