Smell of sweat on school shirts

Try soaking in bicarbonate of soda before washing. It is what we had to do. I think the smell stays in the fabric because we do low temperature washes but bicarb of soda is well known for absorbing smells.

You could put them on the boil wash with lots of conditioner Luckylegs,and spray the arm pits with vanish first and leave for half an hour before washing.

Make a paste of 4 tablespoons bicarbonate of soda to a quarter cup of water. Apply to fabric using your fingers. Leave for a couple of hours, preferably in sunlight.

Try Halo Protective Sports Wash
It’s a laundry liquid specially to deal with removing sweat smells at lower temperatures. I tried it after a recommendation from mumsnet.

Have you tried washing disinfectant such as zoflora, dettol etc a healthy glug added to the wash seems to get rid of most odours.

Vanish gel.

Soak in bicarb.

Supermarkets sell Dettol Antibacterial Laundry Cleaner. I used it successfully in similar circumstances.

You need to wash at 60 and don’t tumble dry.

put neat vodka in a spray bottle and spray the armpits, it breaks down the bacteria
then wash them the day after

I used the detol wash when my mum was in hospital to get rid ofthe "hospital" smell

Dampen the fabric, squirt on and scrub in some Fairy Liquid, then put through a hot wash. This has always worked when I've needed to eliminate the smell of sweat in clothes.

I wash smelly clothes on a very hot wash. Gets rid of it every time.

I soak the clothes in warm water to which half a cup of white vineger has been added, then wash in the usual way. Works for me.

I’d already soaked them in soda crystals and laundry cleanser etc all night, rubbed all sorts into the underarms such as vanish etc, washed at 60 degrees, dried in the sun but when I came to iron, there was a smell still. That’s why I asked for advice because I feel I’ve tried everything. I’ll try the vinegar, fairy Liquid, and everything today. Thanks for advice x

If it doesn't work it could be that these particular shirts have it so ingrained they need replacing. If so, hopefully these ideas will help prevent the same situation with the next lot.
