Kitchen worktops.

My daughter had some of the ‘over the old one’ type of worktop and it looked very nice with little disruption. They have since moved house so I don’t know how well it lasted.

My friend has them and really likes them . She flips houses for a living so she does know a thing or two about kitchens .

Ann, we had them fitted in our previous home, three long runs and fiddly bits around the sink area. Seem to remember the fitting created dust but was done very quickly. We probably had them for 8-10 years before we moved, no noticeable scratches or stains. We would consider them again when our worktop needs revamping. One word of warning, I don’t think they are much if anything cheaper than a new worktop would be, definitely quicker and less disruptive.

annsixty. If you are putting Granite over existing worktops check that your units will take the extra weight.

Isn’t granite very unforgiving re glasses and crockery? I’ve shied away from it because I think one wrong move and things would break?? We have ceramic tiles on the floor and it’s inevitable that if I drop something it’s going to smash. We have wood which I like very much but OH wants to change them - just because ?

Polarbear2, I agree, I love my wooden worktops. I am very fussy with them, and don’t put anything on them which may stain. But I love them nonetheless.

How are your worktops fixed to the cabinets?

Cabinets usually have a support rail or beam at the upper front and normally at least one bracket at the upper rear to provide fastening positions for the top. Old one could be unscrewed without disturbing cabinets.

I like granite. Having it fitted in kitchen in new build. It seems to be resistant to everything.

I’ve just had all my kitchen unit doors replaced and the granite worktops replaced with wooden ones. It took 2 days, with minor disruption.

The kitchen was dark, black worktops and dark wooden doors, now pale cream doors and light worktops, I love it.

I have decided that replacement double glazing will have to take priority and have someone coming next week to measure up.

If you’re concerned about money. First have you looked at the grants for double glazing. I think they’re still around? If not have a look. Might be worth it you never know. Ref worktops - now you may not like this idea but I’ve had it highly recommended by several people for a house I own. There’s a company which does stick on new worktop surfaces. Sounds horrific I know but this is proper stuff. It’s like they use for wrapping cars if you know about that? I’ve also been told that Wilco sell a cheaper version and that it works really well! I’m sceptical I admit but ?‍♀️ It might put you on (northern phrase? ?) until you can afford new???

I had granite worktops installed in a previous house. Hated them. Every little drop of water just sat there after wiping always had to dry off the surfaces. Had to be careful with sharp utensils for scratching which again showed up. Eventually had them replaced when using a meat cleaver to chop up bones for soup stock and I missed the chopping board and hit the granite top removing a splinter and causing a split. Moved twice since and have never considered granite again. Laminate every time for me.
