Anybody else experienced these ?

I am literally 18 Days post op fromTKR & on day 14 I woke covered in , well red welts !
I’m calling them hives ? I have no idea if this is what they are ?
On Day 14 they erupted across my back , hairline on my neck & scalp , right arm & wrist
Day 15 across my lower back , a line across my stomach & right leg
Day 16 My Face / Hair line & left eye

You get the picture , so it has continued.

On first discovery I contacted my GP. Surgery & as requested sent photos . A call back from GP & he couldn’t confirm what it was advised use of Antihistamines & E45 Cream .
Which by the time he called I had already had the sense to use .
He suggested, I call surgery again on Tuesday if they hadn’t disappeared.

I am obviously concerned as to the WHY / WHAT cause .

Also right now I am taking more medication than I ever have done , Yes I used OTC meds but in a as & when basis . When absolutely necessary or when I knew I would be out for a while walking etc .
Now Paracetamol every 4 hrs & when needed Codeine . Plus blood thinners for 16 days . I had Oral Morphine which I had to resort to twice during the night .

So now as well as dealing with the TKR which is fine btw , all healing ❤️‍🩹 nicely managing ok & no worries regarding that . Had clips out & fist Physio session last week .
I didn’t want to stress about the new issue but as it’s continuing it’s a worry & now I have added the antihistamine to my daily mix .

Added a few photos for clarity.

Just wondered why they put you on blood thinners...is it a precaution for a blood clot, post op? I'm on them for Atrial Fibrillation. They clearly recognise the distress and pain to give oral morphine. I don't know what TKR is?

I've had them a couple of times, years ago moving to a new office within the building I was already working in, old and Georgian it was a winter's day and cold so an electric fire was put on. I came out in red spots all over, "you better go home" said my boss "looks like German measles", I went to the doctor who thought the same, did some blood tests, transpired it wasn't. Whilst waiting for the results got signed off for a week.

Another time one of those unusually hot early Spring days. I found myself with others sitting on grass, again came out in hives, I didn't think it was anything else that time. I wondered perhaps the reason being whether it hadn't had the gradual getting to know the greenery as Spring slowly merges into Summer, it was a heatwave and the introduction immediate, "hello grass" after having not being around it for quite a few months. Who knows! That was all before the advent of Dr Google, so my own theory. In both cases my rash disappeared fairly rapidly.

I hope your rash clears OP it does look like an allergy.

Peculiar stuff skin hmm

Picture looks like me when my chronic spontaneous urticaria was at its peak, it started in 2020 triggered by a couple of drug reactions, namely Riveroxban when I had a new hip in ‘ 19, that wore off, but then I was put on Ramipril for bp, and I’ve had urticaria since then. Initially my GP sent me to my local dermatology unit, quite frankly they were useless. I put up with it for a long time time, but then asked to be referred to Guys/St Thomases, were they have a specialist allergy department who are wonderful. I take 4 antihistamines a day plus other medications, I have non scented soap ointment for bathing plus cream which I apply morning and evening. I’ve had biologic injections last year, and am currently having more, as the effect wore off, however although I’ve only had one lot they’ve worked much faster, I have to have five more. My urticaria is autoimmune, no reason at all for it. Good luck!

I had it once from stress.

Bestgrammaever Mon 22-Jun-26 15:52:08

It looks like giant uticaria a common allergic reaction to medication. I suggest you find out which medication before it develops into a more serious allergic reaction i.e anaphylaxis.

I had exactly the same last year. It started on my arm and within 2 days I was covered from head to foot! GP put me on antihistamines but they didn’t help at all. I tried E45 itch cream, which did ease the itching a bit but the rash was no better. After 2 weeks I was getting desperate and willing to try anything. I then remembered I had some prickly heat powder tucked away in the cupboard, so at bedtime I stripped my clothes off and covered myself in prickly heat powder (not a pretty sight), I continued this for a couple of days and hey presto it worked! My rash was put down to stress after just going through the death of my brother.
Hope your rash soon clears up.

I had this following my bilateral total knee replacement. It was all over my legs. Chronic itching. At the time I put it down to the laundry powder that the sheets had been washed in at the clinic where I rehab'd
It sounds like you are at home but just mentioning in case. I hope they go quickly as the TKR recovery is quite enough to contend with

Alison333 Mon 22-Jun-26 14:20:49

Did it start on the leg which had the TKR? Just wondering if something used on the op. site triggered an all-over allergic response?

valdali Mon 22-Jun-26 13:55:24

Look like hives to me - unlikely to get bedbugs in hospital especially on a surgical ward.

Hopikins Mon 22-Jun-26 13:49:51

I have had Hives at stressful times in my life, but I also had Hives when on Morphine following a TKR, I dropped the Morphine and the rash went. Its a horrible thing to have and you have my sympathy

Bed bugs? My son came out in similar after a stay in a B & B abroad…?
No offence just a thought?

Farmor15 Mon 22-Jun-26 08:06:16

Interesting that SueDonim mentioned overactive thyroid combined with stress.
I went through a period of getting outbreaks of hives (urticaria is the medical name) when my thyroid was overactive.
However, it can be very difficult to find the cause of allergies- easier to just treat with anti-histamines and soothing creams!

SueDonim Mon 22-Jun-26 02:17:28

Meds does seem a likely cause but a rarer cause is thyroid disease. Overactive thyroid can cause hives - the stress of your recent op could possibly have triggered an upset to your thyroid.

Usually, the simplest explanation is the right one, but there can be others. Hope you feel more comfortable soon. flowers

Prickly heat?

Exdancer
Definitely not Prickly Heat .

NanaTuesday Sun 21-Jun-26 22:59:05

Bluefeathet

Definitely hives. I get it whenever l am exposed to cold. (Cold urticaria)
I remember both of my sons breaking out in hives when they had Calpol for something tbey both had. It turned out to be (most likely) the orange flavouring. Just mentioning because it could be a filler or colouring/flavouring in your drugs.

Bluefeathet,
Interested that you mention urticaria as that is one of the things I came across as the issue .
Thank you for the Calpol reference though .

It's basically histamine release that causes hives. Allergy (to meds or some skin cleanser /dressing used although timing perhaps too long for the latter) or stress. Stay out of the sun too, sun can be another factor.I get them just with sun/ heat sometimes.

Visgir1 Sun 21-Jun-26 17:19:57

Can be caused by Stress as well. Mine started to appear while I was sitting a further education exam, by the time it was over I was scratching, couldn't understand it at first ? Mine where raised and big. I bought some antihistamine on the way back to the station.
The Pharmacist said definitely stress can do it.
Took about 3 days to completely clear. Never happened before or since.

CatsWhiskas Sun 21-Jun-26 17:05:15

I had something very similar years ago. I was prescribed all sorts of potions, none of which worked. Eventually I used witch hazel, which did the trick. I have no idea if it was just coincidence, but it might be worth trying. It's cheapish, easily available, won't do any harm and (I think) smells quite nice.

ExDancer Sun 21-Jun-26 16:59:00

Prickly heat?

Thisismyname1953 Sun 21-Jun-26 16:44:35

I’d say it’s an allergy too . I used to break out in them when I was a child . Never found the cause but my mum called them heat spots and applied calamine lotion to stop the itch . We didn’t have antihistamines in those days.

dalrymple23 Sun 21-Jun-26 16:13:39

Do check the leaflets inside the pill boxes, where a list of side-effects is available. Several of my meds caused itchy rashes - changed them, and all solved. Also look at the NHS website for reactions to certain medications. It is quite helpful. Don't bother with others, as they will try to sell you something!!!

watermeadow Sun 21-Jun-26 10:48:33

Hives are what Americans call a rash, no matter what the cause.
Yours looks like an allergic reaction and you may never know what caused it but surely your doctor should see it and give you treatment. GPs seem to do less and less now.

Cressy Sun 21-Jun-26 10:40:57

Many years ago this happened to me. I put it down to having eaten swordfish the previous evening. Only appeared on my torso and was quite painful. I took antihistamines and it faded after a couple of weeks. Definitely a reaction to something but finding out what exactly caused it might be tricky.

I didn’t/couldn’t wear any underwater for a few weeks. Difficult as I was still working 😬

Bassoues Sun 21-Jun-26 09:22:01

I had exactly the same thing...hives which spread all over my body, exept it never touched my face or lower legs.
I thought i might've been sun induced but who knows..
We were travelling through Equador at the time and I've always kept a note of the meds i was prescribed by a skin specialist there. ..How we came to see him was another story!!
The meds combo was dramatically effective.
This note has lived in various wallets ever since, hence the state of it! Good luck
