Ibuprofen/Paracetamo l

Recently returned from the USA where we were able to purchase a tub of 500 of each of these. I appreciate we live in a different country but over here we can only buy 2 x 16 tablets at a time. Don’t know if it’s true but we were told it’s to prevent people from taking an overdose. Surely if someone is that desperate they will just go around different stores to purchase more.

My GP told me that nobody over 70 should take ibuprofen.

crazyH Sat 30-May-26 22:09:04

My GCs beloved 83 year old Grandad (paternal) did not take a single regular medication. Passed away suddenly last Monday.

Yes, CrazyH, when your time is up there is no preventative.

No one on GN should take ibuprofen. My GP said no one over 50 should.

MT62 Sat 30-May-26 22:58:40

I don’t understand how Gps can prescribe someone with dementia 100 paracetamol at a time 🤔

I've been told ibuprofen is not suitable for people with asthma.

Interestimg. Also.not suitable if someone is on blood thinners because it thins your blood more.

Gosh there’s a heck of a lot of tablets going down people s throats I prefer to take no tablets unless i m in very acute pain I think you can get very tolerant of them. I m not suggesting you shouldn’t take any but surely the amounts some people take daily is something the body gets totally used to and stops being helpful as the level of need is increased
Have any of you tried alternatives for instance acupuncture or acupressure or massage which is far safer but obviously needs more input than taking a pill
By the way it’s not because I get no pain just seems more sensible to find better ways of dealing with it

The idea behind restricting the amount of paracetamol you can buy in one go is to give people time to think. Of course if someone is detirmined to take their own life they will find a way but deliberate paracetamol overdoses are often spur of the moment especially in young people.
The amount one has to take to overdose is weight specific in mg/kg of body weight. I'm not going to say the amount which equates to a toxic dose on here although I'm sure someone could find it if they wanted to.
Deaths from paracetamol overdoses reduced when the restrictions were bought in particularly in young people so overall worth a little inconvenience.

Yes, this is why I am a paracetomol only girl!

I hope most of those taking these very cheap over the counter medications buy them in chemists supermarkets etc because they cost the NHS dear if prescribed.

MT62. I'm not sure buying parrots will have much effect re pain relief -
If you had to keep on buying them though it would definitely be a distraction!

I’ve tried all that, osteopath, tens machine,MSK clinic, physio who incidentally made my knee worse.
Funny though, my friend who drinks a bottle of red a night, said, she wouldn’t ever dream of popping pills. After hearing this for the umpteenth time, I replied, well I wouldn’t dream of necking a bottle of red every night, also adding the alcohol wouldn’t go with the paracetamol anyway.
She Soon shut up.

They seem to be helping me.
I didn’t find the co-codamol any good apart from sometimes chilling me out.
That’s when I realised I need to try to wean off the co-codamol.
The only drug that wipes the pain is the volterol suppository’s but it’s not good for stomach, heart & kidneys.
So come off those as well.

So why are you opposed to buying parrots?
Is it the repetitive nature of it?

Thankyou Aldom - it’s so hard on his wife - married 61years.
My grownup GD has been staying with her.

I know someone dependent on Co-codamol, her doctor has been prescribing it for years. Codeine is addictive as well as causing bad constipation.

nanna8 Sun 31-May-26 11:55:27

My GP also told me to avoid Ibuprofen because it has an adverse affect on kidneys. I have chronic kidney disease which showed up in blood tests, no symptoms. She said Panadol was ok but not aspirin. Codeine is not available here now except on prescription. All tablets have side effects, you have to weigh up the pros and cons.

Seemingly, it varies amongst individuals as to what would be an overdose …….. I had a patient die from taking just 8 paracetamol some years ago. That in itself makes a farce of the single pack purchase controls.

Is that because they haven’t been spaced out, or have they taken all 8 together?

It was a deliberate attempt to end life

So easy to say but I have had breast cancer and now take a pill to hopefully prevent it from returning.
I get so tired of hearing people boasting that they do not take any pills.
Sometimes they are necessary!

Who me? I am not opposed to buying paracetamol.
Gp have reduced amount of codeine they give me on prescription as I don’t want to stock pile & I just add a paracetamol that I have bought.
Surgery have said when I am totally on just paracetamol they will prescribe a box of those.

MT62 Sun 31-May-26 12:33:36

Ha just got you not spaghetti 🤣
My abbreviation for paracetamol 🤣

MT62 Sun 31-May-26 12:38:12

Ahh what a shame ASIT 😔
There was a lass in the paper around Christmas time, who accidentally took too many due to her painful period 😔
Does need to be more awareness made public around paracetamol.
