Covid vaccine for under 75

I am 70 and considered to have weak immunity due to cancer and chemotherapy. Our surgery did flu and Covid jabs at the same time. My sister ,a year younger was really cross as she and her husband paid nearly £100 each for jabs and he's older than me with heart problems.
Most NHS stuff is of course money driven and based on likely outcomes.
I may not have a suppressed immune system now as nobody tests it but probability says its likely.
I paid to have a knee arthroscopy earlier this year as could not even get seen on the NHS and still not brilliant.
Last year NHS were so behind with cancer check ups I paid to see a specialist to be told the cancer was back and I had the operation and chemotherapy before my hospital would schedule my check up!
So the NHS is a complete mess and often a postcode lottery with a lot of luck involved.
The staff work really hard but unless people pay a lot more tax or compulsory insurance the current system cannot cope.

You can pay for it at Boots.

It’s just under £100 at Boots. At least we can now have one every six months if we’re prepared to pay for it.

Both my husband (85) and I (80) have both had the flu vaccination and covid booster this week at our GP surgery
So glad to know that we are covered.

When the Covid vaccine was being offered to the majority, many people (some here on GN) declared they wouldn’t be having it, they had already had 6……etc etc.

Now it’s being restricted, there is a huge outcry.

Not really, it's just the usual loudmouths boasting about their insanely wonderful immune systems. This JCVI decision has upset many of the quieter people who have health conditions or are carers and are not being offered it. I am one, I have moderate to sever COPD with an estimated lung age of 85 according to the last spirometry and I am 67. I have had every vaccine offered and I will ow have to pay nearly £100 for a private one. I wonder how much I would cost if I ended up in hospital with respiratory distress? It seems to me to be a very short sighted decision and indicates how much this government cares about us.

I’ve been offered one at 69. Wild horses wouldn’t drag me to get one. Nor the flu jab. When I regularly had flu jab I had asthma and every cold going. My immune system now works properly and I’m not messing with it.

DH and I being 69 and 70 don't qualify for the NHS Covid jab this year so we decided to try private ones. Nothing was available at Boots or Superdrug so in the end we went to a pharmacy in a village about 30 mins away. The cost was £100 each. Apparently, there's a new version of the Pfizer vaccine and it's hard to get hold of.

My DH is 72 & has heart disease. He was told he would be entitled to both the flu & Covid jabs. I am 73 & was told I am oǹly entitled to the flu jab. At our appointment my DH was refused the Covid jab, saying he wasn't eligible!! I questioned why all 65-74's aren't entitled (as last year) & was told we've reached 'herd immunity', complete rubbish!! It is all down to this Government's cut backs. Still, as long as Starmer, Reeves & Co get their free jabs the rest of us will either have to pay up, or shut up. Disgraceful!!

Hi Lindy i am 71 and i really can't understand the reasoning of not being allowed to have my Covid jab unless people are immune suppressant or such.

I felt lucky to be offered the Covid jab with my flu jab last week at a well known pharmacy chain. I was told I qualified as I’d be 75 before 1/4/26, but later, I read that the cut off date is actually 1/1/26, so I didn’t really qualify.

DD1 is still recovering from a particularly bad bout of Covid, so having read a recent thread, I was quite prepared to pay for a jab.

I think the cut off date is actually the end of January for those coming up to 75. My husband (75 on Jan 22nd) was given a Covid shot last week along with the flu one. I'm a year older so also qualified for both.

PaynesGrey. Thank you for the info. I was led through lockdown and the rest pandemic by the scientists and will continue to do so. I will not listen to old wives and scaremongers. So if they advice 75+ so be it

I’m 68, I’ve had pneumonia twice in the last 9 months but no Covid vaccine for me. My daughter is immunocompromised and will get it so I asked as I spend a lot of time with her whether that qualified me. But apparently family members of the immunocompromised are also excluded this year. I think it’s a very shortsighted policy.

I come from Trump's Magamerica, where lies and hypocrisy flourish. Please, this retired RN is imploring all the Grands who read this: join me in geting a Covid vaccine!!!!!!!! And a flu shot. Your lives may depend on it? Are there any charities there to help those who over-rely on the NHS?

It strikes me that the reason the covid jab is not being pushed for the under 75s and is available at a significant cost to those who do want it is the government's knowledge that so many mistakes have been made in the past with this particular 'jab' which as said by others, is not a vaccine but gene therapy which is something very different and that can and does affect some people vey negatively and in varying ways. What is kept quiet is the large number of people taking legal action against the covid jab manufacturers because of illness of death directly related to being injected with this genetic modification. These people are receiving compensation. Obviously, therefore, the government is safeguarding itself in restricting the jab and in not making it compulsory for travel or care workers. If it isn't responsible for doling it out, it isn't culpable when the compensation claims come in.

As someone who is lucky enough to be in the care of the NHS since it's inauguration, I think they do a wonderful job with shrinking resources. I have had every COVID and Flu jab, have never contracted the former and last had the latter over 50 years ago. Vaccines are expensive, go on holiday to a far reaching destination and your necessary clutch of protection can run into hundreds, but we pay it without a squeak.

You are not quoting me as I didn't say that. I have no idea what the vaccine costs and neither did the JCVI when they gave their advice - which they make clear in the paper I linked to.

If you know the cost of the vaccine then please provide your source.

DHSC had approved treating vaccine costs as ‘sunk costs’ for the autumn 2024 campaign on the basis that there were no alternative uses for the pre-procured doses and no impact on additional future purchase.

I am a 69 year old GP , working on the front line with patients coughing all over me all the time.Some have already certainly had COVID.
I have asthma and had a bad winter last year with my chest despite the vaccines.
I am not eligible for the COVID vaccine either and I am not even allowed a sneaky left over one ( which is likely to be wasted !) I am quite cross and upset about this , on behalf of myself and everyone else in the same age group.
I have no idea who decided this . I think it's awful.
I am seriously considering spending the money on a private vaccination.
