Hiatus hernia - Nissen fundoplication

@PolyTrack I had this surgery more than a year ago. It is true that after surgery, you will not be able to vomit normally, but the body has other mechanisms to expel when poisoned or infected with a virus. In fact, I only had nausea a few times, but mainly the body pushed it out by burping or diarrhea. The positive thing is that the reflux symptoms have decreased significantly, and the quality of life is much better.

I have the same problem. I have 20mg Omeprazole in the morning and 20mg Famotidine in the evening. I asked if there was anything that could be done and was told not at my age. I was 84 last week. A friend of my daughter’s husband has recently had surgery in which a balloon was involved for a few days and then investigated. Can’t imagine how that was done but he is recovering and pleased with the result so far. He is 60years old. It might have been done privately. Teazel I do hope all goes well. Would be very interested to learn how you got on as my hernia is a giant one but pretty sure it is growing as I have bouts of coughing and I am conscious of it as as if I can feel it as a roll of something.

Events have progressed, my stomach has herniated completely into the diaphragm, no option now but surgery on the day after next. I will let you know how I get on.

Yes, I’m concerned about possible post-op problems. So far, I’m just taking Rennies. I was prescribed Omeprazole, but as my body reacts adversely with pretty much anything I take, I decided not to take it and to discuss it with the Consultant this week. I’m quite underweight, so don’t need anything else to aggravate that!

I have the same large HH. No one I know has had the fundoplication. It seems to be managed with a PPI. I take Omeprazole twice daily. I would worry about not being able to vomit, plus associated risks with the surgery itself. Very difficult decision.
