Front tooth snapped off at root!!!!

I had a front tooth snap off at the root. I did manage to get it crowned. I had to go privately and it took quite a while to settle. The NHS will only offer an extraction and then a plate. They have a lot of new materials that are available privately theses days. They put in a titanium rod. It’s very strong. Good luck.

The exact same thing happened to me last Friday, I managed to get an appointment for last Monday, sadly it wasn’t repairable and had to be extracted. I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t a pleasant experience but was a necessity evil, and if you have a private dentist I would suggest getting sedation if you can (I have an NHS dentist so it wasn’t an option for me) and if you can take someone with you to drive you home and top yourself up with pain killers regularly

I got a tempory solution from Amazon.. You melt some white plastic 'beads' in hot water and mould them into a tooth shape. Then carefully fit it into the gap.
When it hardens its a removeable tooth - the blurb says you can eat with it, but I didn't trust it and removed it to eat.
Open Amazon and type 'mouldable false teeth'. There are videos so you can decide which suits you.
When I showed it to my dentist he wasn't annoyed or anything. He said he'd never heard of it but was fascinated.
It won't help if your stump is painful and infected.

You can buy a tiny quantity of the thermoplastic beads for a few quid, labelled as a tooth maker. Or you can buy a BIG bag of it for half the price, labelled for general repairs and model making.
Both my two top teeth and two on the bottom have snapped in a similar way. They had become very thin due to normal erosion. Luckily I’m under the dental hospital, so no enormous bills. They are doing all kinds of complicated things! But I think they’re trying to save teeth that aren’t worth saving.

Agnieszka, I too have an extreme fear of the dentist, but I won’t go into the reasons why. Let the dental receptionist know of your anxiety so that the information is available to anyone who treats you. I had to visit the main dental hospital in Glasgow a few months ago as a part of my treatment for a broken tooth and they were amazing, the dentist herself was aware of my fears and kept chatting to me throughout the appointment and before I knew it she removed the offending root without me feeling any pain. I hope all goes well, but find a dentist who understands how to treat anxious patients. I’ve been lucky to have found 3 including my current one who treated my situation well.

Agnieszka, I'm so pleased that you managed to get some help, even if you did have to ask your GP. I hope the medication will keep you pain free over Christmas. I hope, too, that your usual dentist will be able to come up with a good solution to the tooth problem.

Metronidazole is a wide spectrum antibiotic and will kill most of the bacteria in your gut so be prepared for that and avoid people with infections 70% of your immune system is in the gut

Take kefir if you can and unpasteurised yoghurt. Rest too, your body needs all its resources to get through a metro course, also afterwards when you will need to build up your own microbiome again.

Curasept mouthwash is important too, keeps the bad bacteria away from the tooth area. It is alcohol free and can be bought online

Saline solution will soothe and rinse debris away, curasept will actively kill bacteria. Just to use until your dentist can make that area safe

I am so glad to hear that you managed to get some help. Let’s hope the meds kick in and that you have a pain free Christmas. I think most people of our age hate dentists because of memories of the school dentists of our childhood - no anaesthetic and a VERY slow drill. Believe me it’s nothing like that these days. You won’t feel a thing. I hope you manage to enjoy the festive period.

Let us know how you get on with the dentist. Sometimes they refer you to a Dental Hospital if it is going to be a complicated procedure where treatment might be free.
I don't think any of us enjoy going to the dentist, mine is lovely but even so it's not something to look forward to!

I am normally a very pragmatic type of woman, that does not panic or become too emotional.
However.....even the word 'Dentist', strikes fear into my heart and soul.
I suspect we all have something that we have difficulty processing in a rational manner.
Anyway, I believe I am now on a level field, and will face each step in this journey as and when it comes.

Agnieszka I've been thinking about you and hoping to hear an update. I hope the medications really help and that you're able to enjoy the next couple of days until you can get proper dental help. What a strain this has been for you on top of the pain.

I am sorry to have taken so long, to send an update.
I only wish I had the words to express my gratitude, for all the wonderful messages, I received from so many of you.
I am genuinely overwhelmed by your kindness, in relaying such good practical advice and of course the all important emotional support.
Anyway to sum up.
The Emergency Dentist did not make any contact with me at all.
I called my Dental Receptionist just to let her know, but she must have gone home too!!!!
I was so desperate, that I decided to phone my GP as a last resort, and could barely believe my good fortune when she agreed to issue a prescription for Metronidazole400mgs and Co-Amoxiclav 500/125mgs. Also a painkiller called Acupan.
I have never felt so relieved. Hallelujah!!!!
I started the therapy right away, and I am very hopeful that I will be safe from infection, until I can access my Dentist next week.
So all's well that ends well.
She also suggested warm saline rinses, so well done and thanks to Pascal and Karmalady. You can both go to the top of the class.
Once again, an immense thank you to everyone.
You will never know how much I needed a hand to hold, and you did not let me down.
You helped enormously.

That is the dentist's job.
Yout task is to get to a dentist and then leave it to them.

exactly plus covering up the gap is potentially dangerous, a warm humid enclosed space for bacteria to multiply. The most sensible suggestion was to use the salt water wash

Oh my goodness ,in pain and swollen face . How are you getting on? If you do get through to an emergency dentist don't pull any punches tell them you are in extreme pain and need immediate attention. I am sorry for you , it couldn't have happened at a worse time. Good luck and please don't fear the dentist appointment, no matter how and you are relieving the pain is your priority - what happens after that is for the dentist to decide. Thinking of you 💐💐

My dentist's answerphone says to do that if you aren't a private patient.

Really feel sorry for you. I had the very same thing happen. I had to have remainder if root/tooth extracted (honestly dreading that but didnt feel any discomfort during procedure) had a gap overnight whilst temporary denture made. Decided in the end to have an implant at great expense which took months but painless. I hope you get sorted soon. I used to be petrified of dentists but nowadays ive found treatment are not painful. You need urgent antibiotics.

Worry about the tooth itself later. You may have to have a bridge or a small plate. I did when my lower front teeth sheered in half as I was chewing on a baguette.
The cost of implants is beyond my budget.

Mine had sheared off at the gum line too but presumably the root was good enough to take a crown.

Otherwise it could be an implant, expensive but, if you can afford it it is worth it for a front tithe.

Agnieska, my tooth was sheared off at the gum line, but there was still tooth left below that they fitted the pin into.

I did have a crown when that happened to mine. It lasted several years and was repaired once but then the pin sheared off and it couldn’t be replaced. I was offered an implant but couldn’t afford it so I am afraid I live with the gap now,. However, the tooth is a molar quite far back.
If a crown can be fitted go for it.
