Pneumonia and shingles jabs- anyone had?

Update- had 1st shingles jab today, was reminded to ensure that 2nd jab occurs/ is booked for end of Jan’25. Booked for pneumonia on 7th August- decided not to have both today as on grandma duty tomorrow and Friday, so wanted to minimise side effects, if any.

Hello all, just to say I always fully intended to have both jabs-but was unsure about both at the same time, especially as we are due to go on holiday a day after the appt was booked.
So I phoned the surgery and now I’m booked to have the shingles jab on 31st July and at that appt can decide whether to have the pneumonia in the other arm at the same time, or on a different day.
Incidentally I had pneumonia when I was about 18mths old- not taken into hospital think it was a case of ‘sink or swim’ plus antibiotics (of which I had a lot as a very young child). I wasn’t however a sickly child growing up,very sporty, but had 2 bouts of bronchitis in my mid teens- so I think I was very lucky, and don’t intend to take any chances 60+ years later.

I had the pneumonia jab some years ago, but never had the shingles one as I was having knee replacement surgery at that time. I'm now way past the age that it's due so probably won't be having it at all.
I believe in all vaccinations where possible.

Absolutely Marydoll, my sister had shingles and was very poorly for a long time, with no underlying illness. I know, from reading your posts, that you deal with significant health issues so shingles is the last thing you need

I don’t think I’ve had pneumonia, certainly had a shingles jab though. (And shingles, previously!)

I would never have 2 on the same day any more - a friend once ended up with a very painful, virtually unusable arm for several days.
IIRC dh has had both together with no ill effects, though.

Please check about the pneumonia one. It really is worth having. I had a friend whose mum sadly caught pneumonia in hospital and was angry that her mum hadn’t been vaccinated but she had, in fact, even offered it but refused to have it done.

The only reaction I ever get is from the flu jab, and then not every time.

The shingles jab is a ‘live’ vaccine, so maybe not suitable for everyone. I had to rearrange to a ‘Shingrix’ non live vaccine because of my suppressed immune system.

The live vaccine has not been used (NHS England and Scotland) since 2023

I had the pneumonia and shingles jabs at the same time. No problems to report.

I'm glad that a solution has been found, mamma. You don't want pneumonia or shingles.

In Scotland the live vaccine is no longer administeted. Everyone gets two doses of Shingrix.
I am immunocompromised and did feel awful for days, but that is not unusual for me after receiving vaccinations.
Better that, than catching shingles.

I’m not eligible for the shingles jab for another 18 months - I fall into that funny age category under the new guidelines, so have to wait until I’m 70. It’ll come round quick enough🙈

Thanks for your replies- I decided to phone the surgery shortly after posting and explained I was concerned about having both jabs in case of possible side effects as we’re due to be going away on Sunday for a few days.
Receptionist was very helpful said not a problem and suggested moving the shingles jab to a date after I got back, and during this new appointment discuss with the nurse whether to have the pneumonia jab at the same time or book in for a separate one.

As we age it ps probably sensible to have the pneumonia jab.
My dd has had pneumonia twice and my dh once. We have all had the injection. It lasts either 10 years or forever, not sure which but it’s worth having.

I had both together - same arm because I decided that I'd like one working arm if there was any reaction. There wasn't 🙂

I've had both, not at same time, no side effects whatsoever. Seeing a friend with shingles years ago, spurred me on.

Had both at the same time arms a bit sore for a day but otherwise no probs.
