What a kind and supportive thing to do to start a thread like this. I hope you can reach out to others who are finding it difficult to know how to help those around them.
I don't like to comment , out of my comfort zone, on GN but your OP stood out tonight.
I really hope your own health problems, physical and otherwise improve soon.

Something that has worried me is how I can help friends and family when they are depressed, stressed and anxious. Especially when my various ailments and impairments are making life difficult.

I’m finding this NHS advice useful.
