Christmas mishap

Sending best wishes to Lucky girl and Teacheranne and hoping you both mend soon. Bad enough to have injuries anyway, but at special times of the year just makes it worse. Take care, both of you.

Just spent 2 and a half hours in the covid soup that is fracture clinic.

The bone broken is the first metatarsal along the inside of foot, near the big toe. Apparently it normally takes a major bump to cause it to break - I just tapped it lightly on the edge of my stick. But I have bad osteoporosis for which I am having every possible treatment.

Six weeks at least in the boot, but he has said that I can gradually weight-bear as pain allows. That does make life easier as I can stand on it and have my hands free to put a ready meal in the microwave.

Mummer I used to fall a lot, but put it down to wearing Shapers Shoes, seemed a lot better when I changed back to Normal footwear - until I was in a busy York, and got pushed off the pavement onto the cobbled road. The irony was i was just going to the train after an appointment at York District Hospital, that's where I ended back to have my new hip replaced. That was 2017, I have fallen once since, in poor lighting

I had a knee replacement several years ago, getting belongings up and down stairs was not easy. I solved many of the problems by making a simple cotton cross over bag to put phone, purse, water bottle etc. in leaving my hands free for hand rail and walking stick. I made one for a neighbour when she had her hip replacement. She said it was so useful.

OP what did you trip over? Is it perhaps time, once you are mobile again for new glasses? That's usually why I start falling over things.

Hope you are on the mend very soon so for the time being just sit and relax with a good book and a big box of Xmas chocolates. I hope 2022 will be better for you and the rest of the Gransnetters who have had a bad or troublesome year

I had both hips done two years apart and nevfell or nearly fell at all! However I fell over frequently before I had them done as my legs simply wouldn't work! I don't see the problem? I'd love to know why people 'fall' after they have had a hip done?

Sorry to hear of your woes - have you had a bone density scan ? With repeat breaks you may need medication to guard against fragile bones.

Ouch Luckygirl that’s really tough for you on top of your hip problem.
I had a hip replacement two weeks ago and am now paranoid about falling over while I am on two crutches. It’s so easily done isn’t it, no matter how careful we are.
I hope all those with injuries make a speedy recovery.

Blade Annie. Bit cheeky I know but I’m on a list for an ankle fusion. I e put it off twice as I’ve only ever heard of negative results and not positive ones. It is such a challenge when on your own to carry anything when on crutches (upstairs) and frame (downstairs). Plate of dinner? - well, no. Glass of water? - well, no. Thank goodness I had a stairlift put in when I moved in in March.

As far carrying and getting around downstairs, if you have hard floors (even just in the kitchen) do you have an office chair on castors? Or could you borrow one? You could whiz around on one of those, propelling yourself with your other foot.

Luckygirl ?. Hope you soon feel better. After I had surgery to fuse my ankle and was non weight bearing for 12 weeks, we got a cross body bag (which became know as my pouch!!) and I could safely transport a bottle of water or juice from the kitchen to the lounge. I also used to make a hot drink in my travel cup. Mine is one which seals properly but if you don't have one if these you could use a small thermos. Where there's a will and all that!!

Thank goodness for your stair lift, Lucky, I hope you can sail majestically and safely up to bed with a cup of Baileys hot chocolate and a good book.

I am clumsy and accident-prone so have been trying to concentrate and be more careful but it's so easy to do.

Crikey, Lucky! I hope the painkillers are really good ones and that you get better soon.

Oh, Lord, Luckygirl3, what a bummer. ?for rapid healing.

Such a pain - literally and metaphorically - when walking is difficult. I once managed to break a toe shortly before we were due to go on holiday - thankfully it didn’t stop me swimming in the sea, but the sort of sightseeing that involves wandering around for hours was right out. A short hobble was my limit.

Get well soon. That was really bad luck wasn't it.

Esspee - I have had at least 7 bone breakages in my lifetime, starting when I was 18 months old. I do have osteoporosis and am on every possible treatment .... I try to be very careful so as not to break anything else, but sometimes these things just happen out of the blue - and when they do, my bones are vulnerable to breakages. I keep telling my DDs (in their 30s and 40s) to take calcium, or to get their levels checked.

Poor you Teacheranne. What a nasty experience. Thank goodness your sister was there to help. I hope your thumb soon heals. Must be very painful, inconvenient too as we use our thumbs constantly.

Are you taking anything to strengthen your bones?
I hope everything heals well and that will be the last broken bone you suffer from.
