Amlodipine possibly helps to slow or prevent dementia.

My legs and feet swelled possibly due to daily 5mgs Amlodipine I had to get new shoes and sandals and can't wear boots.

I had been taking 5mg of Amlodipine once a day for years. Was diagnosed with AF the Saturday before bank holiday. First thing they did at AF clinic was take me off it because of water retention. Never had any problems with it apart from swollen ankles before getting AF. But apparently AF and Amlodipine is a bad mix.

I was prescribed Amlodipine in July, took them for a month but my feet and legs swelled up to just below the knee. The GP changed them to Lercanidipne, and they seem to suit me better.

Do you have any links for that Kali? I'm always sceptical about claims for turmeric - particularly as there is no recommended dose.

I use it in cooking!

Serious research studies have also shown great results with Turmeric- which is cheap and easy to get.

I gave out bucket loads of amlodipine when I worked in a nursing home for people with dementia. I think its a lottery really. I hope the study is accurate, but I'm taking it with a pinch of salt.

Sorry to report that my DH was on Amlodipine for years but latterly succumbed to Dementia. Perhaps it depends on which type of Dementia you develop? His was Frontotemporal.

I think the possible success is linked to vascular dementia

I tolerate the 5mg but not the 10mg which gives me bad palpitations, also I occasionally get hot flushes (well past the menopause) and the GP agreed it’s the Amlodipine. But it helps managing my BP.
Granny23 sorry to hear about your DH, it may help preventing dementia but sadly won’t be for everybody.

I've been on 10mg for nearly 10 years with no apparent side effects. Good to hear that it may have side benefits. BTW, seeing this thread reminded me that I hadn't taken my tablets yet - can we start a "Have you taken your tablets today?" thread to remind me every morning?!!!

I know people who've taken it for years - as it seems to be the first thing prescribed for HBP (probably the cheapest too).

I couldn't tolerate it at all. I had a splitting headache, dizziness, nausea, sickness - and complete loss of balance!

Good news about dementia

I started taking them 3 weeks ago for high BP, they seem to be working and no ‘Kankles’ yet!

I take 10mg a day. I started on 5mg but after a year it didn’t control my blood pressure so the dose was raised and has worked well ever since. My husband also takes Amlodipine. We don’t suffer from swollen ankles normally, but I do find they swell when I’m walking a lot on holiday and the weather is very hot.
It’s good news to hear it’s probably got other benefits, but I understand the study was on mice and is now to be conducted with humans.

Well some good news about medication instead of the usual doom and gloom ones! I take 5mg Amlodipine with other tablets and I do need this specific one to stop by BP from going sky high. So if it helps with dementia, all the better!

I take it too. My GP told me it might cause my ankles to swell and I could also have hot flushes. I used to be quite proud of my slim ankles, but sadly they are puffy nowadays. I do also have hot flushes, but not for long and not always. If it is really proven to delay the onset of dementia, I will live with puffy ankles and the odd hot flush.

Wow. That's brilliant news. I've been on it for several years now, obviously for high blood pressure and it works. I've never had side effects. So if it keeps dementia at bay too, that is fantastic.

I had very swollen ankles when i took it for a few days sadly.

It made my legs swell so much I literally couldn't wear any of my shoes.
