Not actually true EllenVannin
^When the 1918 flu hit, doctors and scientists were unsure what caused it or how to treat it. Unlike today, there were no effective vaccines or antivirals, drugs that treat the flu. (The first licensed flu vaccine appeared in America in the 1940s*

Flu Vac and Covid Vac possible interraction?
(55 Posts)Always been pro VAC- and never had hesitation in getting myself vaccinated, my children and grandchildren.
But this time is different- I DO NOT TRUST this Government and the Covid vaccination programme. They intend to go ahead without it being tested properly nor registered- and I will not be having their vaccination.
Is anyone aware of any study/research into possible interractions between Covid Vac and Flu vac? Has this not been thought of at all?
I agree with MOica nobody will be taking those vaccines together or even remotely close to each other.
EV that is disgraceful misinformation to have posted on this thread. Some people are very frightened, I am not one of them but you are not helping.
Where is this Panacea then Maw ?
EllanVannin you are not just the messenger.
You are the person who chose to post that statement without checking to see if it was true.
I was alarmed to read your post and am glad that others were able to give correct information.
We've had the Asian 'flu---SARS, MERS but no vaccine ?
EV Vaccine development in the 20th and 21st century has been one of the greatest public health successes. There were so many diseases that killed many of our grandparents generation which are very rare, or unheard of in this country now.
Great strides have been made and will continue to be made because science is advancing at such a rapid rate. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that a successful vaccine to COVID-19 will be possible quite soon.
Alarmed ? FarNorth .Bit of an exaggeration isn't it ? Perhaps I'm reading too much in that sensationalist broadsheet---the Mail ?
EllanVannin. It usually takes many years to develop vaccines - and by the time they are usable the threat his passed and they are no longer required. That is why there is no vaccine for the 1918 epidemic. It isn't required, the pathogen no longer exists.
It is quite exceptional that, potentially, a vaccine for COVID has been developed so fast. It has built on the pioneering research done when developing a vaccine for Ebola. I think you will find this article about the development of the Ebola vaccine very interesting, I certainly did. www.statnews.com/2020/01/07/inside-story-scientists-produced-world-first-ebola-vaccine/
With SARS and MERS they were not as infectious as COVID and were brought under control by containment; contact chasing, quarantine and treatment. Had they been more infectious and spread across the world, vaccines would have been developed.
Frankly OP you are just scaremongering - fancy putting such a nonsense idea on people's heads.
Heaven knows we have enough troubles without adding in this crap.
If you have any decency you should ask HQ to delete your post.

And indeed the thread which degenerates into some sensationalist misinformation.
MawB2, I think the problem is that the effective teaching of science and statistics at school in the UK has never been good and the older you are, especially if you are female, the worse your scientific and mathematical education is likely to have been.
Unfortunately this means that, unless people have set out to educate themselves when school days are long gone, there are often deficiencies in their knowledge and understanding of those subjects for which they are not to blame.
Monica if you haven’t got the education or knowledge about a subject, then don’t post on it.
But how do you know whether you fall in that category or not? There are clearly many people who are unaware of this.
Ah well that’s real intelligence- knowing what you know and what you don’t. If you post something that would clearly worry someone and you haven’t checked it then you are being stupid, thoughtless and inconsiderate.

There's no Covid vaccination yet is there, so how can there be any contraindications?
The OP was just a question- it did not give any false information. If it did, I would ask for it to be removed. Why is it wrong to ask and discuss. If you have facts that can show that my question is irrelevant- I would welcome it. Thanks.
Being Devil’s Advocate: People may be posting about something like the vaccine development because they are worried about it. There is so much fake news on Social Media and elsewhere, that at least there is then the opportunity to point out that these concerns are unfounded. Hopefully that will be a good thing for people who haven’t got all the background information, to help them make their own minds up.
By the way, I’m quite old and I’m pretty scientifically literate ? Some young people, however…. ? (joke)

AstraZenica have halted their tests since someone has lost the use of her legs after having the Covid vaccination.
As a retired RN, should you not reference your source?
suziewoozie I think this thread suggests that a lot of people are doing just that.

I have barely got beyond the first three lines - what are you implying?
If you mean me - wash your mouth out with soap and water!
If you mean anybody else posting on GN - how patronising.
You are saying that
1)Women know less about science than men,
2) women of a certain age know even less.
I am lost for words.
You may be speaking for yourself - not me!
biba70 nothing wrong with asking, it is some of the answers you were given, which were both alarmist and uninformed.
Riverwalk I imagine that most daily's have a piece about it today if you've bothered to read it !
Like I said----don't shoot the messenger !

biba70 we posted at almost exactly the same time, and I think we are saying the same thing. I hope you took it from my posting that I agree with what you have written here.
On GN it’s not unusual for sneering comments to be made esp by the RW about posts with links or made towards posters who call out false information. As said above, giving links would help as would a more positive attitude from the right towards facts.

EV if you’re in a hole, stop digging.
The only reference I could find today was in the Mail, although you may of course have seen it somewhere else as well. All of the language used was inflammatory; AZ deny this, AZ refused to say that; talk of secret files. Its all designed to alarm people and undermine confidence in the vaccine. I have no idea why the press do this, but sensationalism sells. The Mail is not a good scientific source.
The trials may or may not result in a successful vaccine, only time will tell. But using phrases like "lost the use of her legs" is just inflammatory. The woman is getting better! Even the Mail says so, in a round about way.
