You say Naproxen makes you ill. My GP won't prescribe it.
Is it that it upsets your stomach?
If so, have you tried buying a gel such as Voltarol and rubbing a little on your hands before you go to bed?

I can sympathise, I seem to have developed plantar fasciitis and it is very painful especially in the mornings or if I have to go to the loo in the night. I don't like taking anti-inflammatories either.

I’m not a fan of taking anti inflammatory drugs but sometimes they are needed. I’m currently taking naproxen but my GP prescribed omeprazole to be taken along with it to reduce the risk of stomach problems.

Perhaps you could ask for it to be added to your prescription. Without it then naproxen, ibuprofen etc can be severe on the stomach lining

If you could tolerate a small short course of naproxen it might be really beneficial

Try rubbing olbas oil into your hands. It really helps my mother. Naproxen can cause severe stomach upsets and is usually prescribed with omeprazole but I couldnt tolerate it.

I always feel if you need a tablet to take away the side effects of another tablet it’s a truly bad idea
Id definitely look at some gentle exercise and more natural help, turmeric or CBT oil seem to help some people well worth trying hot and cold alternating can be helpful

Look on the internet for any self help groups, For painful or swollen hands you can get so many ideas that are more helpful than medication that causes problems to your body

I feel for you, my one hand is so painful now and my toes, I cannot sleep because of the pain. I get a little relief by soaking the achy parts in really warm water and then massaging with lavender oil and olive oil mixed. It doesn't cure it but helps for a while.

I use Deep Relief gel.

Has your doctor told you exactly what's causing the pain? If it's inflammation of the nerves, which it may be after a viral infection, you could try asking if Gabapentin would help.

I had a nerve flare and only needed to take it for 3 weeks, so it doesn't have to be a long-term thing.

Magnesium could help and soaking in warm water (or cold if that's better) containing a handful of Epsom Salts.

Flexiseq Active is a very expensive gel for your hands but it does seem to work- worth a try- I know what you are suffering I hope you get some relief.

Just before the lockdown I was diagnosed with arthritis in my jaw joint. My doctor told me to drink Turmaric tea, that's what he takes ?
I buy the fresh root when I can but otherwise I use the powder.
The results were A-maz-ing ?

Perhaps I should try them.
The plantar fasciitis (self-diagnosed but obvious) is worse first thing but eases off during the day.

I do recommend trying the anti inflammatories with Omeprazole. I find I can tolerate a short course like that and it does help. I don't think the gels are worth buying and my GP agreed with me. I learnt to do quite a lot of things with my left hand when my right hand was bad. A referral to Rheumatology or Pain Clinic could help. I found acupuncture helped.

I have arthritis in several of my fingers, both thumbs and in my feet. I have kept the pain at bay since 2014 with Rhus Tox & Ruta cream, which I apply every day. It works a treat and no side effects. Available from Amazon.

Because my eyes are getting worse, I've cut down on how much I read here but have been posting fairly regularly in the Lockdown Gang.

I did try turmeric but was reliably informed I smelled like a curry! I hadn't noticed this of course but another lady in our elders group began it and I understood what they meant.

When I first started with RA over 39 years ago, and before it was properly diagnosed, I was prescribed naproxen suppositories. I used it before bedtime and it kept me going all through the next day. As it didn't go through the stomach there was no stomach upset.
Do they still make the suppository version, if so they are worth trying.

Only last week my friend gave me some KIND hemp gel which she got from Amazon to try. I use it on my joints on hands it seems to be helping with pain. I have also started taking turmeric capsules, only been on them a week not sure if they are doing anything yet.
