Does Cataract surgery cause retinal detachment and dry eye?

Never heard of these side effects - and their have been countless threads on GN on this subject. If all these have not raised a mention of them, I would say they either do not happen or are so rare.

Any form of medical treatment, indeed life itself is full of risks. Do you cross roads? Yes, cataract treatment can go wrong, but very rarely, but what is the alternative?To not have them treated and slowly go blind? Now that does sound risky.

Well, I did follow the link and it is to an eye surgery in Toronto, as someone guessed. I don't know whether it was posted to catch clicks or because the poster did want to hear know of about eye clinics there "And, can someone please suggest me any clinic that offers cataract surgery in Toronto for an affordable cost. " but I should have thought that contacting ANY reputable eye consultant to ask about safety would get honest answers - or even a general physician.

All surgery carries at least a slight risk but cataract removal is a common procedure these days, done routinely.

Dry eyes are mostly caused by problems with tear ducts, which are a long way away from the eye lens, and the retina is also a good way away at the back of the eye. There is no reason for the cataract operation to interfere with either of these, unless it is performed by a really incompetent surgeon, and whoever told the poster that they would is talking rubbish.

Luckygirl i m like you have had torn retinas repaired twice and it’s no problem at all and so far ( it was a good many years ago) they have held perfectly well the surgeon described it like mending socks without the needle
I too have cataracts which I m noticing are getting cloudier in bright light not so bad indoors but I m waiting to see if they offer me the op and I ll go with it with both hands

But it’s very mainstream here and seems very well tolerated by all I know who have had it

What is your main concern? Is it the laser aspect? I have had torn retinas treated twice with laser and it was no problem at all.

I am not sure what your worry is. Cataract removal is so common now - it really is just routine.

I should have said that the retina and lens are two different things. The retina is at the back of the eye while the lens is on the front surface.

I have over the years had lots of eye problems including partial detached retinas which were lasered back. This was nothing to do with cataract surgery which I also had some years later. I have had both my lens replaced because of cataracts. I was given the choice of lens replacement or cataracts removed. Having the lens replaced means that I no longer have to wear glasses for very short-sightedness but do have to wear the weakest reading glasses which I can buy from any shop that sells them.
I do suffer with dry eyes but this is nothing to do with the cataracts in the eye but through the eye no longer being lubricated properly. I personally would have it done again and if you don't, you will eventually not be able to see properly as everything will look very cloudy. Good luck on gaining confidence.
