I don’t know how I missed this thread! I hope all went well Jane and you’re now back in your bed sleeping it off. Courage for those first steps to the loo!

My second TKR was five weeks ago tomorrow. It has been easier in a way knowing what to expect and that it will get better. The anaesthetic has just about got out of my system now and I’m not falling asleep all the time. Normality is returning!

Hopefully your op will have gone well this time too and you’ll throw your sticks away within six weeks!

Am back in the room. Not feeling nearly as sick. So far so good. Had spinal with sedation. Legs still thawing so no pain - yet!!

Jane take heart, I had my knee done at the end of January and there was a lady in the ward having her second knee replacement. She was worried sick just like you as she had a terrible time after the last op but she let everyone know how she was feeling and the medics went out of their way to help. Her recovery ended up being nothing like her first and she was over the moon. So good luck and a speedy recovery.

My broken femur was much easier to deal with and I'm up and about without frame and only occasionally one stick.
Hope you (literally) follow in my footsteps with a quick and relatively pain-free recovery!

Good luck Jane. At least every day from now is another step to being over it all, and with two good knees. GN is thinking of you.

Hope it goes well. Many years ago my elderly aunt by marriage had both knees done together. Made the world of difference, no more pain and she could manage to walk with a frame, having been in a wheelchair for some time.

Good luck with your op. and wishing you a speedy recovery. Thought I would you a laugh. A friend of mine (male) went into hospital for an op. where he was given paper pants to wear. To cut a long story short, he thought they were to put on his head, and that’s where he put them! He couldn’t understand why the nurses kept laughing at him, as no one told him otherwise and that’s how he went down to theatre???. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in theatre...it could only happen to a man.........

I had my first knee done 21 months ago and while I wouldn't say I am free of pain, it would seem that my hip and lower back are affecting that.
The op itself was no problem and even at nearly 80 I was out and walking reasonably well after 3 nights.
I was able to take myself to the loo day and night after the first night.
Because of this I would be worried about a second one as no two seem to go the same.
Fortunately I am able to take any pain relief without any trouble ( and I did).

Hope the op has gone or is going well, jane10. I can well believe recovery taking a year. All the best for a quicker recovery this time and the sickness dealt with.

Good Luck, Hope it all goes well. I understand the trepidation though, I can't take any pain medication except paracetamol, so operations are a bit of a problem, but as another poster said better behind you than still to come.

Good luck Jane things can only get better. My sister who is 86 and lives on her own has just had a knee op. She is getting good support at home and has lots of physio to cope with. Bed has been moved to the lounge as she's not coping with stairs yet. So glad she will be out of pain and mobile again soon. Job well done.

Tramadol and codeine are both opioids. Horrible side effects even if good at pain releif. Keep Off!!!

My other half has had both his knees done in the last 2yrs and he was more anxious the second time, I guess it must be harder as you are more aware of all that goes on. Funny thing is he was also very sick afterwards too and he had both lots of surgery done with an epidural so it was nothing to do with the anaesthetic, so I am guessing his was due to all the pain meds too.

Just come across this thread - hope all goes well Jane. I've not yet had to have any joint replacements, but I know it's only a matter of time, as I was warned I would need one at some point when I had a knee arthroscopy 10 years ago

Just leaving hospital after a hip replacement. Luckily all went well but a little trepidation as going to an empty house! Have good friends but no near neighbours. All best wishes to you.9

Agree Anno, was given Tramadol after codeine made me v. sick - it was adequate for pain relief but had horrible withdrawal symptoms even though at that stage I was taking only 1 tab per day.
