Has anyone got flu at the moment after having a flu jab?

in our area there is a non flu chesty virus going around. DD developed tonsillitis as a result and DH has an awful cough which is slowly improving, it's been like sleeping with a mating walrus.

Very interested in this Post, it seems there have been lots of really disabling type Viral?? illnesses over the last three years or so, could this be
connected to the nasal flu spray that children now have, I
understand this is a Live flu virus that supposedly does not cause disease in Healthy people, what happens if a child who a short time ago has had this nasal flu vac then sneezes/coughs or somehow leaves its nasal/oral fluids around? I'm all for flu vacs but note with some interest USA has discontinued the live nasal flu vac.

My toddler grandchildren both had the by mouth flu liquid. It was weeks before I was told by our practice nurse that I shouldn't have been caring/with them for two weeks after this. Children are given a live vaccine, I have a challenged immune system so can't have live vaccines and should have been kept out of the children's vicinity. who knew?

Scarlet fever is quite prevalent just now, my grandson has it. Just wondering about Auntieflo's DH with the red rash?

My Flu was diagnosed from a throat swab, the Pleurisy it has left me with has also been diagnosed by my GP.
Therefore I am going to assume that Saggi isn't of the opinion that I had a dose of 'man flu'!
Despite having the flu jab, I was diagnosed as having H3N2, which is Aussie Flu.
Fortunately, having the jab in late September seems to have given me some protection, as although it was horrible, it was of far shorter duration and milder than I would have expected!

Mine was flu. And no, I didn't lay in bed tapping on the iPad, I didn't give a toss where the bloody thing was. However, because I'd had the flu jab, the mutation I got which came like a bolt out of the blue, was fairly short lived and didn't last as long - probably. I'm just left with The Cough which I know from past experience will be with me until late spring. The upside is that I seem to have escaped any cold symptoms. No runny nose!

Apparently about 2% of those who've had the jab still get flu in varying strengths according to their fitness. This one is mutating unusually fast and it looks as if about 20% are still getting it. This is causing some concern as if it's a sign of things to come it's going to be difficult to pre-guess what to do next year.

Also ... Keep on with flu jabs ... Cold and flu ... are NOT the same.

Well said Mawbroon... It's a nasty cold you have not flu.... I thought it only men who thought colds are flu!! I had horrendous colds over the last 5 years lasting from 3 weeks to 2 months!! None of them were flu! I now take zinc supplement to boost my immune system and have had 2 colds in last 6 months which were what I would call 'normal' ... 3/4 days of sniffling and headaches then gone! If you had flu you'd know it...and certainly wouldn't want o be sitting up and tapping out messages on Gransnet!!! Get well soon all the sniffles out there ... and try the zinc!

My friend and her DH, who are both 10 years younger than me and much fitter, both had flu over Christmas and both ended up in hospital with pneumonia. This year's version is really nasty and hopefully the jab gives some protection.

I agree with MawBroon. I got the flu jab (free this year) but got what might have been the Aussie flu with a terrible cough, high temperature, sneezing and aching a bit. I feel that it would have been a good deal worse if I hadn't had the jab. Get well soon.

I've been having the flu jab annually since well before I reached the magic age. One year, I attended a conference only a week after the jab, and acquired what could only be described as flu - other delegates also went down with it. Then three years ago - the year when the virus played dirty and mutated so that the vaccine didn't give full protection - I got the bug but just a mild dose. My son had arranged to take me for a city break in Rome, so I staggered out of bed and, despite having to rush to the toilet in the train to throw up, I made it to the airport and Rome. After I returned home I went back to bed and resumed having flu. I did wonder how many Romans I managed to infect, during my lovely little holiday.

Last year we all had a nasty virus thing characterised by a cough and terrible headache. Lasted for ages for me and I was having radiotherapy at the time so had to miss a couple of sessions and tack them on at the end. Hope it doesn't reappear this year. for everyone who is suffering. No arranging required.

Sorry, forgot to say I had the flu jab in October.

I’ve been unwell since 29th December. Had a course of antibiotics and steroids, started to feel better for two days then came down with it again only this time the cough is much Chestier. Doctor has prescribed yet another course of antibiotics and steroids and requested a chest X-ray. Really don’t feel well enough to sit in the busy X-ray dept tomorrow but looks like I’ll have to. Thank heavens for DH looking after me.

You don't get immediate immunity from the flu jab, it takes a couple of weeks to build up. Flu symptoms after the flu jab can either be the result of catching flu before you've developed immunity or it can be your body's immune response to the jab, which has similar symptoms.

My DH and I both have the flu jab each year, but for the past 3 years we have contracted the flu. My doctor says "but think how much worse it would have been without it"! I DO wonder.

I have flu jab as I have a couple of medical conditions where it is advisable, not had a really bad cold except in 2016, I've been having flu jab for about 10 years.

I had pneumonia jab which is supposed to give life-long protection, in 2015 I spent 5 weeks in Hospital with pneumonia

I had my flu jab, as ever, in late September. Have felt fine all through the autumn/winter, until the evening of 7th Jan.
We'd been out for lunch, had a lovely, restful, pottering sort of day, and were sitting with drinks, watching TV for a while before I made us a light supper, and then, like a bolt from the blue, it struck!
Within fifteen minutes of the first shiver, I was in bed, wrapped up, with hotty bottles, a fifteen tog goosedown duvet and a fluffy throw on top of that! I didn't leave that bedroom until Sunday 14th Jan (apart from trips to and from the loo, which exhausted me).
DH phoned Dr on 8th, they sent a nurse to do a throat swab, as they didn't want me near the surgery, not that I could get out of bed to go there anyway! Yep, I had flu!!!
I think having had the flu jab meant I got a much milder dose than I would have otherwise, and it was bad enough, even so!
I made it downstairs on Sunday afternoon for about ten minutes, but felt dreadful so went back to bed.
Th flu symptoms have finally started to leave me, but joy of joys have left me with Pleurisy! So, antibotics, and bed rest!
There's a TV in the bedroom, which I couldn't have cared less about last week, but may watch a bit of this evening, if I can stay awake for more than ten minutes at a time!
Worst of all, I can't see my DGS yet, I miss him terribly, but I'm not going to risk going near him until I'm no longer wandering around with my little bell, muttering "Unclean, Unclean"!

Sometimes I get flu-like syptoms after a flu jab. I am hoping to be luckier than usual this time as I had the jab this morning.

My h has had a cold for a few days, keeps on coming over very hot and then shivery. We have both had the flu jabs
I think he’s got slight symtoms if flu. He also has morphin patches for his arthritis only a low dose, wondering if that’s causing problems for him as well.

Now I know why I do not have the flu jab as it does not cover every strain

Contrary to GrannyPauline's post, I think the flu vaccine has worked very efficiently for us. I am the only one in this house who didn't have the vaccine (I don't fall into at risk categories) and I am also the only one who has been laid low by what I am pretty sure is flu. I was in bed for four days, when I never go to bed when ill, and I couldn't have cared less about a £50 note or even a £500 note.

We had ten people here over Xmas/NY and the only other person who has been ill is my youngest Dd, who did have the vaccine, but she wasn't as poorly as me. No one else has had so much as a sniffle.

I'm going to pay for the jag next winter, I don't want this again, thank you!

A lot of people who didn't have the vaccine got flu, too.

I ado feel it’s everybodys duty to protect the more vulnerable to have the flu vaccine.
I do as I work in healthcare and I know it’s not an exact science there are many strains of the flu virus.
I would also advocate the Pneumonia virus as it’s a one off jab.
So many very poorly people around currently.

I had the flu jab, like I do every year, but this year, I've got the cold/virus from Hell ! I just can't shake it off, the one consolation is that if I hadn't had the jab, the cold/virus could be much worse, as I am Asthmatic, so could easily have ended up in Hospital.
