Sudden Hearing Loss

3 weeks ago, after a few days of flu like symptoms, my poor DH woke up to deafness in both ears. We went to see a doctor a week later and she said he had an ear infection, which was probably viral, but she was more worried about his awful cough and prescribed antibiotics mainly for that. His cough is subsiding but his hearing is no better. He can hear me if I shout really loud, or phone him on my mobile. He can also listen to the radio/play music using his phone.

We have sorted the TV with a gadget that plugs into the TV and sends a bluetooth signal to his headphones.

Now I am looking for gadget that will amplify normal speech. Has anyone out there had a similar problem and could recommend an off the shelf hearing amplifier? Then he might feel like being social again.

Does he have wax? It sounds like he needs to go back to the doctor or nurse to have his ears checked for wax then if it is there are lots of preparations that can help it soften. Wax is in the outer ear. You can get swelling/infection in the middle ear which takes a long time to resolve and if he is dizzy or nauseous then it might be a middle ear problem. The most simple cause would be wax though and that can be checked easily. Good luck.

DH suddenly lost hearing in one ear. He can give the exact date and time when this happened. He was given the diagnosis of a an infection. Labrynthitis to be precise.

His hearing loss remained for about six months and has since gradually improved and it is almost back to normal.

Rather than buy something on your own, I would ask your GP for a referral to a hearing clinic or if he won't a number of companies like Boots offer free hearing tests and recommendations.

I had this in one ear last year after a bad viral infection - it lasted for several weeks and was really awful. The practice nurse tried syringing but it didn't do any good as the infection was behind the eardrum. In the end she told me to resort to good old fashioned warm olive oil each night - not to plug it but to sleep with a towel under my head. Eventually it did clear up. Hopefully his hearing will improve again given time.
