Bunion

I put a latex cover over one of my bunions to stop any rubbing and it works well. Boots no longer sell these covers so I got them from Amazon.

Just be careful if anyone in your family suffers from Dupuytrans in the hand or Ledderhose in the feet as any sort of operation can trigger it.

Had the worst foot done 7 years ago as it was very painful. Found it all fairly painless, even during the initial recovery time. Managed stairs easily, sideways up and bottom down. My surgeon recommended wearing the ugly attractive sandal for eight weeks then go for a checkup. I think this is longer than many advise. I did as he said, no problems since. Pain free foot. There is a bunion on the other foot - I was actually born with the wretched things - but it isn't painful so leaving well alone. All I would say is if anyone does go for it is following post op advice seems to reap rewards.

I've had both done, the left one was giving me more pain than the right one. I recovered quite quickly,after the first op six weeks later I was looking after gas in a house with three floors,DH got pneumonia and had to stay at home! I also had the dog to walk! I'm really pleased that I had the ops done. There was a few years gap between having them done, I wouldn't have had both done at once, a frienid did and it was much harder work. My feet have gone down by a half size and it's much easier to buy shoes. There is no sign of them coming back and it's about ten years since the first up. The most painful bit was having the nerve block as I didn't want a general anaesthetic.

I have no cartledge left in my right big toe from arthritis and a small bunion I am in a lot of pain walking but grit my teeth and keep on keeping on I was offered the op to pin the toe and make it immobile but so many I know say they wished they hadn't had it done that I ve declined for now at least

My younger sister and I both have a bunion - hers is worse than mine, her big toe actually crosses on top of her 2nd toe. But mine is going the same way.
Eventually arthritis settles in - sometimes painful, sometimes not.
I think surgery on the foot is a very last resort - it's so important to be able to keep active, especially at our age. An operation like that would reduce activity level for some time.

My main problem (apart from unsightliness) was the adjacent 2 toes on each foot got bent/squashed. That seems to have settled down now. Still wish so much I didn't have them though - my feet remind me of my mother's now when she was old!

A friend had the surgery, which had a long recovery time, and it caused some sort of problem with the alignment of bones in her foot, which then meant more surgery... I have just resigned myself to wearing (slightly) more sensible shoes and hope mine doesn't become painful. I'm keeping my prettier shoes though, just in case!

Agree totally with Charleygirl! Leave well alone if you have no pain! A friend has had years of misery and several operations to try and fix the damage done in the first place.

If you do not suffer with any pain I would leave well alone. I would not have it done for cosmetic reasons only. You could end up a lot worse than you are now.

So would I! I have bunions on both feet, hate them. My GP said that they can come back after the op so not worth it..
