OH coughing all the time

Could you ring his GP and tell him you want a second opinion as the symptoms have lasted too long?
Sounds as if needs looking at by ENT bod to me as no improvement.

Know what you mean about cough...I've been plagued with it for months now and have pretty much same diagnosis as your oh except that my asthma has been with me for life.

I've been put on two new meds-Montelukast which reduces allergic response, and Carbocisteine which thins mucous making it easier to cough up. I've been a lot better with these drugs and once my morning clearing of lungs type coughing is over that's pretty much it for the day. Great improvement. Perhaps your GP needs to reassess your OH's meds.

Other thing that might help-physio told me not to cough but to take three deep breaths then 'huff' out to clear chest then you only need small cough. It works very well and is much more gentle on throat and airways.

Hope you can make some progress with this.

Go with him to the next GP app (I doubt the GP will discuss him without him being there) and gently suggest referral to a respiratory consultant.

Thanks for the replies. Katek he is also on Montelukast, which doesn't seem to have made any difference, but when he next goes to the Doctor I will go with him and mention Carbocisteine. It does seem as though he has trouble coughing mucous up and complains that it feels as though he has something stuck in his throat, hence the infuriating throat clearing. Thanks again for the advice.

"Something stuck in his throat" sounds worrying. I'm not any sort of expert but have a relative who turned out to have a very serious condition, which started with similar symptoms to your DH.
I definitely suggest he asks for further assessment, preferably a gastroscopy.

It could possibly be adult silent reflux. Have a google for the symptoms, Ceesnan.

I have had a chesty type cough for the last month, almost better now, but felt sorry for Mr Rosesarered for all the coughing, spluttering and throat clearing I have done!Sometimes it felt as if I couldn't breathe with the throat clearing it really is horrible.I have always had rhinitis, which is worse in early Summer. I have never taken anything for it, but suppose I should really.The GP said that antibiotics were useless with a viral infection only any good with a bacterial infection( but couldn't say which one I had of course).That's why GP's like you to wait at least 3 or 4 weeks before they try any Meds.

Ceesnan if he thinks he's got something stuck in his throat he needs to be investigated pronto.
Possibly it's nothing serious but it does need looking at.

My DM had this and it was an enlarged thyroid, treatable and cured.

He needs to be referred to hospital. It's probably nothing but it still needs checking. When DH had persistent chest infections and cough it turned out to be a partially collapsed lung.

I've had a cough since Christmas. Eventually antibiotics helped but it did not go completely away. Chest clear etc.

At doc yesterday and he says to double my tummy medication (lanzoprazole) as acid reflux is a big cause of a continuous cough. In the meantime an appt for a chest xray has been requested.

Is he taking an ace inhibitor drug- as they can cause very long and prolonged cough.

I have a Hub, with identical cough ect as yours he's had the very same treatment and diagnoses too, it has been going on since 1993 he's actually got it right now plus clearing of his throat ,he was awake with this cough all night so was I .so I can sympathise with you.

Has he had a chest x-ray. if not he should talk to Dr. or Asthma nurse about having one.

Yes he has had x rays in the past that have been normal so I really don't know what other avenue to take ,he has all his inhalers ,and preventors but the thing being is I have yo remind him all the time to take them he is really quite stubborn when it comes to any medication he has to take as he doesant like taking anything... I don't think it's fair on me and the family because we all worry about his health yet he Doesant.

I have asthma, tree pollen allergy etc. and have had a problem with a cough for years. I find it is worse if I drink white wine. I think it may be the sulphites. My daughter is the same. Could some sort of allergy like this affect your DH?

Persistent cough from a viral infection can last a month or two. Adults do get whooping cough (even if they have been vaccinated). They don't always whoop but may cough for a few months.
Anything that goes on longer should be investigated thoroughly. I agree OP, call your GP and ask if he could be referred.
