anyone else had abnormal results of bowel cancer screening

Ethel had the discussion appointment last week, and the actual colonoscopy is on 28th.

We can't be with you in person, ethel but we are with you in spirit.

I am not sure if she is actually having the colonoscopy done this Friday. I think that she is going to discuss it with somebody first. She may post to say that I am totally wrong, I hope so because it should be done and the sooner the better.

Just an added word of reassurance for ethel should she return to the thread. My DH had a colonoscopy last year. He said it was a bit unpleasant and uncomfortable but not at all painful. I attended the hospital with him and saw several people going in for this procedure. At no point did I hear anyone screaming in pain. I can understand your fear and I would be apprehensive but please take reassurance from the very sensible posts here. DH was fine, there was nothing wrong.

Oh dear- stress? Trying to ignore the issue? Have we upset her ? Maybe not obsessing would be a good thing, but somehow I doubt it. Fretting alone would be very destructive and I hope that is not the case.

ethelbags my DH has had two colonoscopies, both with sedation. He loathes anything like that and if there had been any problems at all he would never have had a second one.

Hope all goes well, etheltbags. Keep calm, perhaps the GP can prescribe something for you to keep you calm and do some deep breathing. I hope the results will be negative (is that the right word?), there are all sorts of reasons for a screening test to be abnormal as other posters have said.
That being said, I have been too much of a coward to do mine.

Even if the worst comes to the worst and that is NOT going to happen . Don't worry too much, my friend has just had bowel cancer and is now fine and all clear.

The prep and the waiting are the worst- it is easy to get upset thinking about it. Good luck when it does take place.

Dear Ethelbags, I know that the wait is so much worse than the actual procedure. I have had 5 colonoscopies and polyps removed, there really is nothing to fear. Am a nurse, a big coward and so very aware of both sides of the table, so as to speak! The staff are very good at putting you at ease, and I do hope all goes well for you.

I agree with everything that Penstemmon has said. I took the time and effort to reply to your concerns re a colonoscopy and I do not like to be called a liar. As previously mentioned, I elected not to have any sedation and for a split second I felt the tube being passed into my anus and after that I was trying to watch the screen but I did not have my glasses on.

It is nonsense that you will end up with a chest infection because it is light sedation, not a general anaesthetic. Why not get the procedure over and done with and stop slagging us and the NHS which did not cock up- I think you were fortunate to be offered an earlier date because somebody will have cancelled for whatever reason.

I have had a knee replacement done and that was painful!

I think that etheltbags has been a member for long enough (give or take a name change or two) for our names to be familiar to her even if not to you, but in any case this is only your interpretation and such aspersions might have been better left uncast.

I am saying that ethel may feel that she cant trust some posters if she has not seen them about enough, or if she has never heard of them.
It is about how ethel feels, not about the trustworthiness of the posters.

When I had a macula off detached retina I turned to google and read, with one good eye, everything I could and without exception the inference as well as stated word was that the outcome for sight "was bleak". I was very upset about the whole thing. Eighteen months on I have very nearly 20/20 vision in that eye. ( that's perfect vision)
So Ethal Read things on Google but take it with a pinch of salt. Believe instead what the dear GN'ers have to say who have had the procedure you are facing and be reassured. All will be well.

Soutra, you have the wrong end of the stick regarding my post. I was trying to say the opposite ot ethelbags.
I have no idea how long she has been a poster on this forum. But assuming she has been here a while, and assuming that she recognises the names on this thread, then I was trying to say that she should be able to trust them.

I have not had this procedure so cannot comment on the level of discomfort you may feel ethel but you have got yourself well and truly wound up about this. I can fully understand why, it is a very worrying time for you and it is not a procedure many would have by choice.

However I do think your angry words about having to fit in with NHS appointment cock ups was not appropriate! You had the chance to have the procedure done sooner (possibly because other patients cancelled appointments) For good reason you could not take up the offer. Cannot see the need to castigate the NHS!
