64, flushes galore!

The only advantage to still having hot flushes is that people may think I am younger than I really am?

I am 68 and suffer very badly with hot flushes. I had HRT patches for many years but the doctors are reluctant to prescribe them now. I have had soya milk on my cereal for many years but perhaps that quantity is not enough. I am a bit upset to read about the alcohol though as I enjoy wine. Perhaps I should try to give that up for a while and see what happens. Why is it that everything that I enjoy is bad for me?

It does seem that those who still suffer in later years are in the minority. Depends what hand you're dealt with I suppose. Someone said to me once 'Aren't you a bit old to still be having those'!! Will have another go with Angus castus though. Am not overweight, I don't drink alcohol and I do a lot of walking and swimming so I do all the right things. Pretty boring really. My friend tells me her Grandmother suffered hot flushes into her 80s. I had never heard of anyone suffering that long. I never had any problems with hot flushes.

Interesting, Atqui. I have eaten soya for a long time in various forms. Never connected it with no hot flushes. Took agnus castus until I was 60, and haven't needed it since.

I didn't take HRT, but took Estroven, which has a high level of soya isoflavins. I stopped taking them a few years ago as I thought the hot flushes had stopped. Recently they returned ,so I now take some similar tablets and, now you mention it I realise that the hot flushes have stopped again.

Hot weather seems to trigger this for me. Had a lot recently but it rarely happens in the winter....

Yes, MiL is 70 and she really suffers. She was advised to lose weight and that has helped a lot. She used to look as if she had just got out of the swimming pool all the time, now it happens less often but she says if she eats cream, or puts on any weight, it gets worse again.

I thought it was my medication making me really hot and perspiring sometimes. Perhaps I am still having hot flushes

Oh great Mishap that's really cheered me up!! Well, I think I am probably going to have them for the rest if my life so I'd better stop thinking that they might be over soon. Might give Angus castus a go again Annaries. Hope your doctor continues to give you HRT Suebailey1. I know they are reluctant to prescribe it when you are over 60.

I will be 67 in a couple of weeks and I regularly get migraines that are accompanied by hot flushes. My GP hubby says he used to see women well into their 70s still getting symptoms.

Sometimes so does tea and coffee, too.

Pep me too and luckily still on HRT (61 and a half) but I have to go and beg the GP every 6 months. Last year had a trial of it while I had an operation on my foot - HELL. Hot flushes all night long. So its HRT for me but if you cant then its all the natural things and above all sorry to say alcohol makes them ten times worse!!

Agnus castus worked for me.

I too get hot flushes but I hadn't realised that's what they are! I didn't for one minute think after all these years there could be a connection. My last period was 9 yrs ago, they stopped abruptly with no symptoms at the time and I was smug in the fact that I'd sailed through the menopause.

I don't get night sweats or anything else but I often find myself with wet hair and looking as if I'm crying. I put it down to the weather and being over weight.

Thanks so much for replying Sunseeker! Sorry you too are still suffering but also pleased that I'm not the only one on the planet. isn't it awful? I can almost tell the time by my flushes,every hour during the day and about three during the night. Along with insomnia, agitation, headaches, etc,. I'm getting too old for all this!

Welcome Hotmama I am another who is still suffering hot flushes (I am 65). Night sweats are the worst but often during the day I will feel the sweat running down my face and my hair is wet (during a visit to someone in hospital yesterday a nurse asked me if I was OK because of my red face and wet clothes!) I am unable to take HRT as I have had breast cancer, like you I have tried all the usual remedies without any success - haven't tried the soya milk one so will get some today and see if it helps!

I wish, several female cancers in the family, I have benign breast cysts and have migraine with aura so too risky for me.

I had symptoms for at least 10 years hotm. I made the decision not to take HRT but what helped with hot flushes for me was a large glass of soya milk every day. This also,worked for friends who were, like me trying any alternative to HRT. I used Alpro unsweetened soya milk.

Can you not take HRT, hotm?
