No, it won't be anonymous. Will be NHS Number, date of birth, postcode, and all your medical diagnoses, and will be linked with other data bases, so actually very easy to identify.
The point is, this data is being extracted without your permission, or even knowledge, which is a breach of the Data Protection Act. There will be a poster in your GP's surgery, and a leaflet on the counter, but that is all.
I'm all for the benefits of research, no problems with anonymised data, which will be taken anyway. It is the taking of identifiable data without consent that is wrong. Actually they don't need identifiable data, you can 'pseudonymise' it so that the actual identity isn't known, but so far they won't adopt this.
