Lobelia from seed

I don't bother about getting too many seeds germinating. I scatter seeds all over a tray of compost , wait until they have germinated and grown a couple of inches then just break off lumps to sow where I want them to grow on. Dead easy. After they've flowered and set seed I pull them up and store upside down in plastic carriers so the seeds drop to the bottom and start the process again.

I also like Casdon mix sand with fine seeds -so much easier to see .
But I very rarely sew seeds these days .
My neighbours four cats dig up everything I plant .
I use kebab stick and black pepper around seedlings .

I sow tiny pinches of lobelia into modules.. the 6 cell ones.. and just grow them on like that.. hardening them off and getting them to the size I want befire planting out.
No pricking out required..no waste.. once planted out they take off! And last till autumn.

I sometimes grow antirrhinums in vermiculite. They are tiny black, dust like seeds. I use a medium sized shallow seed tray and try to space them as evenly as possible. I spray them with water but I don't cover them. It seems to work for me. I know lobelia are very different when they are grown up but the seeds are about the same size.

The pellets are white, so easy to see so don't end up too close together.

I've bought lobelia seed that comes with a few seeds together in small pellets - Lidl own brand, very cheap . The seedlings come up in clumps of 3 or 4 which can easily be transplanted as they are.

I don’t grow lobelia, but for tiny seeds I mix them with dry sand because it’s easy to see where you’ve sprinkled it, and distributes them more evenly. Picked this tip up from my dad, so it might not be an official way, but it works.

They say mix seeds with sand, so you can control what you add.
