Sweet Peas

Mine have been very good this year. It is correct to snip off the tendrils to get more flowers. Always take off spent flowers before they make seeds, in fact picking the flowers regularly encourages flowering.
Sweet peas are hungry plants, I put home made compost and well rotted manure in the soil before planting. Through the growing season I give them a high potash feed such as tomato food.

I've never been able to grow them. My grandma's garden was full of them. Climbing up the fence and trellis. Just beautiful.

Sweet peas doing very well this year in the south west. I pick them every other day to encourage them to keep flowering. My cardoon isn’t out yet but I’ve got loads of artichokes ready to cut off on one plant. Cardoons and artichokes being close cousins you’d think both would do well. Roses are doing well - the deer haven’t been in the garden so much.

I’m in the north west Grammaretto. We had a long cold , wet winter, then a short period of intense heat. I watered them during that as they were shooting, it’s now so wet after pouring rain over several weeks. Still the majestic Carndoon is glorious. It has three main shoots, about 7 ft tall and the thistles are beginning to show colour

Mine are yet to flower. I am in Scotland.
I expect them in August.

Not just my sweet peas then? Other shrubs and flowers have been fantastic.

Ours are all white! DH has supported them tied to a trellis, and has snipped off the tendrils. This should put more energy in the growth. He said he heard it on Gardener’s World.

Mine haven’t been very god this year either and they’re all red! 🤔😂

Sweet peas don’t like hot weather, mine have been pathetic but they are coming better now. I wouldn’t bother pinching the side shoots now, unless you want show blooms.

I ve had far fewer flowers this year iam64 and all purple whereas they are usually all colours my pear tree has one pear last year 30 and my honeysuckle is very poor it’s usually covered in blooms some other things are more prolific I think the lack of rain at a crucial time for some of the plants has made a difference (although I watered nearly every night)
