I remember DH growing cabbages, they suddenly grew quite tall and sprouts appeared on the stems - he hasn't tried again to grow cabbages or sprouts!

That’s annoying WW I put a piece of wood by the door so the greenhouse door is open slightly on sunny days so cats can’t get in.

I have just potted up my hosta plants that I sowed several weeks ago.

Tomato seeds up next, I like to get these in early to get a decent crop.

Following. We won’t be growing much this year as we are making changes to the house and garden, but am planning for next year.

I grow Cavolo Nero, had most of the growth and picking before Christmas, now having a second little flush.

Potted up 3 Calabrese and 1 cabbage i sowed on about 15/1 and put them into the warm box from the propagator.

It is so frustrating, dying to get going!

Snow forecast at the weekend, although I doubt we will get any we never do these days.

Neighbour and I are going to grow potatoes in tubs throughout the year, probably some runner beans and carrots too. I want decent tasting potatoes for a change, plus an interest.

I grew Charlotte for Christmas. Enough for two bags. They were absolutely delicious and I still have enough left for a salad.

I’ve got Swift first early chitting in the greenhouse. There is enough for at least 3 bags.

I pulled some carrots for lunch. They are growing in the greenhouse.

I love it?. I am in danger of over doing the pots and tubs I think.

Compost is needed by the ton.

I shan't sow anything until March (or maybe the end of Feb) apart from maybe tomatoes. I have a tiny veg plot (with plans for more but don't tell DH yet as he will be making them and he is busy just now.) There are some rather small leeks there and a row of spindly spring onions. Last year I had very good carrots and loads of climbing French beans. We also grew a couple of tubs of potatoes so we will do that again, and tomatoes in the greenhouse.

Well I've finally stopped procrastinating and have been in the greenhouse sowing for my indoor propogators! Tomatoes (Crimson Crush, Crimson Cherry and Maskotka), leeks, chillies, aubergines (Pinstripe), Tom Thumb lettuces, sweet pepper (Blockie mixed) and a new variety of Rudbeckia that I like the look of for a bit of colour in the borders. Cornish pasty for lunch and then a bit of dressmaking for GD. I feel very virtuous now

Blimey you’ve got going! I haven’t heard of those tomato types, be interested to know what they are like.

I sowed Chinese cabbage, salad- oriental mix, radish today - just in the grow beds in the greenhouse, today. Still doing the square foot though.

I’ve been growing a winter cabbage and have about 5 - all looking very healthy but are not hearting up. I would have expected them to be hearting by now. I have fed them last week so will see how they go.

Apparently the Crimson Crush varieties of tomato are particularly resistant to blight, which is the bane of my life in this part of the country even when grown in a greenhouse. Time will tell, I'll report back! My chinese cabbage which I planted outside in the autumn are a bit chewed by slugs, along with the Pak Choi, but the middle leaves look OK so I might even harvest some for a stir fry later......

Shut everything down. Next week maximum is 1c?.

The only thing I’m doing today is to stake the Christmas tree I have just planted out in a large pot, as it looks as if it is leaning.

If it snows I hope it looks pretty.

Oh and prune and tie back a climbing shrub that has broken its support.

Chinese greens bed has a nice cosy cover of double net curtain that my daughter found in the cupboard of her flat about a year ago (left by a previous tenant). I built a frame from an old polythene covered four shelf greenhouse that fell apart years ago. Hope that keeps the worst of the chill off!

I have Casablanca, early and King Edward chitting in egg boxes on the kitchen table, good job we can’t have visitors.

Can anyone recomment an early salad potato that is resistant to blight? I would love to grow some in potato bags, but we have a prevalent blight problem here in East Herts and it gets them every time I try to grow them.

I have just posted on another thread and then found this one - has anyone tried growing vegetables in a veg trug? I tried to grow some vegetables last year in pots, took such care yet failed dismally! Yet people make it look so easy. Not to be outdone, I have put the trug together and now have to fill it, sow seeds indoors and when strong enough, plant them in the trug. Has anyone got any tips or advice as to how I might achieve some success? I have prepared another area actually in the garden and have yet to add nutrients, but I'm actually feeling quite nervous about planting in it, so any advice there would also be helpful. I have watched some videos on You Tube, just trying to build confidence!

nananet01 most of the Sarto variety are supposed to be blight resistant, the only early I can find is the Sarpo kifli, I have no experience of it. What problem did you have using pot?

Jaxjacky I had tomato plants in breathable pots, under cover in a plastic greenhouse, the best compost I could find, watered regularly and shielded from weather as area is enclosed. They grew strong and tall then developed a white covering on stems which spread and they wilted. It may have been too late in the season? I don't know which type they were as I picked them up from someone giving them away.

-1c here all day, but I’m going to sow chilli and sweet pepper in propagator plus some lettuce and Duncan cabbage.

I had an quick look this morning, when feeding the birds, and the salad leaves I sowed in the greenhouse bed -unheated- are germinating! I am astounded given the temperature.

Rest of the day I shall view the garden from the window?

JaxJacky, the potatoes I did in a pot got blight every single time I tried to grow some!

Well everything ground to a halt for a week or two, but looking good for a few days, so at long last I’ll be out in the garden.

My broad beans and peas are totally zapped so I’ve pulled them up and composted.

Now busy planning.
