Gladioli

Thank you for your replies. I'll be lifting them in the autumn, then. ?

I’m in Norfolk and I lift mine.
I left it to my DH one year and he didn’t dry them properly so had to start again.
I cover them with newspaper and keep them in a cardboard box after they are dry.
It’s making me quite exhausted just thinking about it all.

Mapleleaf: I live in the North West and wouldn't dream of leaving my gladioli in the ground over winter. I lift them when they are finished flowering and dry them out for about a month on racks, then store them in a frost-free place where mice won't get at them. I re-plant them about mid-April. I've been doing this for years and now have several hundred bulbs. This year the ground in your area and mine has been soaked and frozen several times which would be death to most summer flowering bulbs and corms. Hope this advice useful. Best wishes.

Thank you for your reply, whitewave. Our soil is quite well draining, and where I'm thinking of putting them is sheltered from the worst of the frost, but nevertheless we can get some quite severe frosts, sp maybe it might be better to lift them?

I live in the South and always leave them in, but we never get a penetrating frost, nor do they sit in wet poor draining souls. So I guess you need those conditions to keep them in the ground.
