Mine was Mastermind - it was the perfect format for me - only needed one other person to play it and it didn't last too long and I loved the logical thinking it needed. Wish I'd kept my board though....

Cluedo for me, and Careers, both by Waddington. Every Christmas one of my brothers or I got a board game which was played to death over the following year. Anyone remember Totopoly - the horse racing board game with two sides to the board? One for training and one for the final race. Leoardas II was a favourite horse of mine!

We had Totopoly and never worked out how to play it!

I liked happy families, the card game, and was there one called Donkey, too?

Cluedo and Monopoly

NotSpaghetti Fri 05-Jun-26 20:07:49

Yes Cluedo and Careers were also fun - we still have these, alongside Monopoly, Chinese Chequers and so on.

Mousetrap, although it never worked like it did on the adver.

Hahaha I still remember the frustration around blinking mousetrap!!

Wheniwasyourage Fri 05-Jun-26 20:12:52

I'd forgotten about Sorry, but I loved it too. Thanks for remnding me, Cossy.

Does anyone remember Scoop, where you had to make up a newspaper from different kinds of stories?

Now I like Super Cluedo, which has more wrinkles than Cluedo.

There is a biggish age gap between the oldest and youngest in my family, so we played a lot of snakes and ladders and ludo because we could all join in, I also played Scrabble a lot, in fact I still do, but online these days with my friend, I still like it because it really makes you think hard.

we never had board games when i was young, but i taught my son to play games, he loved snakes and ladders and then we played backgamon, chess and draughts as he got older.

I also remember Beetle Drive, which was just dice and a scoresheet. When my children came along it was Build a Beetle and the parts were plastic. We bought a set when GS was small and he loved it. We still have it and drag it out occasionally!

Jaxjacky Fri 05-Jun-26 20:36:27

Draught, then Monopoly.
I had a Compendium of Games for Christmas once, wasn’t impressed!

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jun-26 20:37:59

My mum was the draughts queen

It was really hard not to have a tantrum when she cleared the board in one move.

VANECAM Fri 05-Jun-26 20:47:08

PIT, the stock exchange card game. Lots of shouting from “the floor of the exchange” swapping cards across the table in pursuit of the full set. Great fun and the more players the better.

Silvershadow Fri 05-Jun-26 20:52:04

Draughts closely followed by Monopoly which I played every weekend with my brother.

BoggledMind Fri 05-Jun-26 21:14:27

Ludo, then Monopoly

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jun-26 21:18:06

I never liked monopoly
Safe to say I'll never be a property tycoon.

I remember playing draughts with my grandad. He had many grandchildren & we used to all visit at the same time; he used to sit in his chair with his teeth gritted for the duration. But he did enjoy a game of dominoes or draughts if there was room to find a surface to play on.I didn't like listening to the grown-ups gossiping, so it was usually me & him playing.

OldFrill Fri 05-Jun-26 21:36:27

I had a game called Scoop about newspapers and a game called Trek with plastic camels.

NotSpaghetti Fri 05-Jun-26 23:28:28

Wheniwasyourage and Cossy - I also has Sorry and still have Scoop.
Scoop is really only kept for nostalgic reasons. Haven't played it for years...

NotSpaghetti Fri 05-Jun-26 23:31:54

I expect most of us had dominoes, drafts, chess and cards.

The best thing about cards was that you could play lots of games on your own.

Matza Sat 06-Jun-26 00:11:29

Ludo and Snakes and Ladders.

Mollygo Sat 06-Jun-26 00:14:47

Chinese chequers, chess and draughts. I preferred playing card games like euchre and whist.

pably15 Sat 06-Jun-26 00:16:02

I hated Monopoly, still do...I liked ludo, drafts dominos

Lovetopaint037 Sat 06-Jun-26 02:55:27

I used to play drafts as a child. Enjoyed this but my younger brother was not a good loser and threw the board up when things didn’t go his way.

MissAdventure Sat 06-Jun-26 02:59:20

I think my mum would ave thrown me up in the air if I'd done that
smile
My older grandson used to be a terrible loser, too.

I'd run myself ragged so i could beat him at swingball every time.
