Scottish Government Proposes Price Cap On Essential Foods

It has absolutely nothing to do with food.

Scotgov are drafting a bill which will be thwarted by UKgov as it contravenes the UK Internal Market Act. This promotes huge outcry from SNP and furthers their call for an independence referendum (that referendum is also NOW being drafted by the SNP who say they will have a referendum whether UKgov agree or not).

All a political game and a total waste of money.

Cap prices and farmers will simply stop growing that food stuff because it will cost them money to do so. Supermarkets will stop stocking that food stuff because it is not profitable to sell. Farmers will try instead to grow crops that are profitable, alternatively they will let their land lie fallow.

What about different types of food within the same heading? For example organic foodstuffs v non-organic. A wide spread price cap on all bread, or all chicken etc will kill the organic food sector. Even a price cap on the standard white loaf will be difficult to define. What about craft bakeries making standard loaves made with organic flour?

The solution suggested by the Scots is a lazy cop out. What they need to do is deal with poverty and its causes.
