Liver and onions

I like liver but can't bear handling or cooking it. So thank heavens there are some nice liver/onion/mash ready meals around.

This happened after this thread…..out for lunch with DH and calves liver was on the menu, I couldn’t resist.

Liver takes almost seconds to cook😮

After two hours the liver would have the consistency of leather. Are you intending to eat it or sole your shoes?

Fry chopped onion and bacon in a pan for 5-10 minutes, add liver, brown boths sides, 3 or 4 minutes a side, add flour, water and stock, simmer for 10 minutes. Takes roughly 30 minutes at most.

I have cooked liver and sausage casserole but cook liver separately and add to near the end otherwise it disappears into the gravy and just end up with liver flavour gravy.

I adore lambs liver with snipped up bacon and onions.
I’ve used this recipe for 49 years. I remember the cookery book I had in our first house in 1974. Eventually I got rid of the book, but only once I’d torn this recipe out first!

We love lambs liver and onions the traditional way with mash and peas.

Sometimes I do it Italian style with loads of tomatoes and onions and cream. That really is lovely.

Do both in frying pan.

I usually just fry but wanted to try Slow Cooker and saw this in booklet that came with it and thought I would give it a try
Braised liver and onions high 2-4/low 5-7
2 tbsp cooking oil 225g (½lb) lambs liver, thinly sliced
25g (1oz) plain flour 1 large onion, thinly sliced
300ml (½pt) beef stock
Heat the oil in a frypan. Coat the liver in the flour and fry till sealed. Transfer to the slow cooker.
Add the onions to the pan and fry till golden. Stir in the remaining flour and stock. Bring to the
boil, stirring. Pour over the liver and cook for the time shown. Serve with grilled bacon.

A quick fry for me and I love, love love liver and bacon and onions.

I've never cooked liver in a slow cooker. I usually fry it on both sides, then remove it from the frying pan while I fry the onions and make the gravy. Pop it back into the pan to continue cooking for a few more minutes.

liver and kidneys make me gag just to think of it- and the smell is just unbearable, never mind the taste!

Haven't cooked liver and onions for a very long time - might do now though. Always used lambs liver , fried it gently with onions , thickened the sauce with corn flour added stock cubes as necessary. Never tried in slow cooker, will give it a go .

I think it depends what sort of liver you’re cooking. Lambs liver needs only frying for a short time. My mother used to casserole pigs or ox liver long and slow in the oven, having first soaked it in milk. I only cook lambs liver now, with smoked streaky bacon and onion gravy. Lovely!

I would have thought liver was one of those things you didn't need to slow cook. Surely it would be fried in the time it took to set up the slow cooker and warm it up.

I'm surprised the liver was soft after 2 hours, but glad it was a success. You live and learn!

That sounds like a long time to me, I used to fry it for a couple of minutes on each side.

I haven't eaten meat for a few years but do remember liking liver and onions with mash potatoes.

midgey it was delicious, put the mash on after 2 hours and the liver was soft and tasty Yumm

I have no idea but could I come and eat the other half! Sounds delicious.
