Im new to Lidl and Aldi at Christmas .

Lidl do delicious dark chocolate, rum flavoured marzipan chocolates. I happened to also have some Niederegger marzipan chocolates (vastly more expensive) and prefer the Lidl ones.

Lidl's three fish roast is delicious, it is a solid block of fish with a lovely cheesy sauce topping and their multi-grain brown cob bread is very good too.

Aldi mascarpone lemon cheesecake is to die for, their greek style yogurt with ginger, honey, coconut or lemon is delicious as is the irish whiskey fruit cake.

So many goodies, so many savings to be made. We've shopped at both these places for years and noticed with wry smiles how many posh cars are in the car park!

Christmas starts when my DGD and I make up the Lidl gingerbread house kit! It is about a fiver, easy to use and very impressive.

A couple of years ago, I bought quite a few packs of Christmas Goodies from Lidl. Unfortunately, they weren't to our taste. I found them to be very 'spicy' in a gingerbread-y way. I presume it was because they were very much of the German Christmas Traditions.

I can also, honestly, say that I'm one who can't abide Panetonne either - I just don't see the point in it at all .

I didn't buy them last year - and won't be buying them again this year, either.

I like Aldi and Lidl, but I do prefer Lidl. In their Bakery dept where they bake their own bread, they make a Low GI bread and rolls. They are very tasty, brown bread, with nuts. Also at Christmas their choice of goodies are great. The Marzipan Stollen, and Stollen bites are very tasty. Also the Christmas puddings. They also do small Mince Pies, just enough for a taster. I am a very happy customer

Lidl now do sourdough bread which is very good.

Aldi continental cheeses, especially Gouda and Manchego - much cheaper than e.g. Waitrose, and better flavour. No one's mentioned the alcohol - fantastic wines for around a fiver, and the best value (and delicious) champagne. Lidl gin is brilliant, and both Aldi and Lidl have well-known beers cheaper than anywhere.

Aldis malted brown loaf is lovely.

Oh, and their rice cakes, which are topped with pink yoghurt (apparently).
It tastes like nice strawberry flavoured chocolate.

Has anyone tried the Christmas Dinner in a Yorkshire wrap from Lidl? They sold out quickly near us.

We eat a lot of Aldi’s Roquefort and feta cheeses and they are very good.

I hate Lebkuchen. Don't eat Christmas pud, cake, meat, game, alcohol, salmon, paté, dips, stollen, pannetone, gerkins, mince-pies, in fact 90% of Christmas food items mentioned here.
I do love most vegetables so I only have those for lunch and possibly home-made trifle or chocolate tart for pudding. No Aldi or Lidl within 20+ miles so I shop at independent stores for cheeses, chutneys, dairy, breads and fruit and M&S and Waitrose for anything else

Do Lidl actually make the bread in-store (mix dough/prove/shape etc) or simply bake pre-made goods?
I suspect the latter.

I buy Aldi’s “pretend Baileys” and we actually prefer it to the real thing plus the price is something silly like £3.95 a bottle

Lidl and Aldi both do a lovely bottle of Australian Sauvignon Blanc for around a £5, all I need for Xmas!

When my DC were teenagers they would have died rather than have their friends know I had even set foot into either Aldi or Lidl. How times change! We are now all great fans of Aldi cheese, wine, the aforementioned rosemary and salt/pepper crackers, frozen calamari, roast in the bag chicken and the cheapest organic milk you will find anywhere.

GabriellaG - I daresay that Lidl do finish off pre-baked instore. But still prefer their’s to bakery goods such as G***’s bakery products stocked by Waitrose which I find are far too dry and heavy for my taste. Agree with you entirely re: Lebkuchen though

To prove that your suggestions ard not falling on deaf ears. Here is photographic proof of my first foray into Aldi.
These are just some of the things suggested by gransnetters, having "viewed" the others and got my bearings I shall be going back for another go.

I couldn't resist the Christmas cake and pudding even though we've made our own. There is me plenty of willing helpers to eat them.

I couldn't see the three bird roast but instead I've included in the photo my new mittens. Lined and lovely and thick £3.49. Choice of hats and gloves too for that price.

I've bought the Lidl's traditional Christmas foods - German Stollen, biscuits etc. and shop there weekly for everyday products. Not always completely satisfied with their fresh fruit and vegetables, as I prefer the local farm shop, but generally have saved money by selecting Lidl over Tesco and the rest!
