I have just found out my dad (82) doesn't like his toast buttered whilst it's hot!

Butter toast when hot. Then let it go cold and butter it again.
Please say it's not just me doing this.

If people can't be bothered to make their preferences known for years then, sorry, they deserve to put up with continually getting them how the cook makes it. Best still, they should make the stuff themselves how they like it.

If the toast is just warm enough to slightly melt the underneath of the very thick layer of butter but leave the top layer intact that is good. Otherwise cold toast with lashings of lurpak is fine. Baggs, -my Irish great grandmother used to crush the crusts of thick toast I was told. I think of her when I do the same in order to preserve what are left of my old teeth?.

Hubby has recently told me he doesn't like carvery lunches. We have gone to carvery for donkeys years.

I like cold toast that is a bit burnt (I believe burnt food is not very good for you so only have it now and again).

Came downstairs one morning to find our bestman wildly waving his arms about with a piece of toast in either hand This was the cooling process in speedy operation. Never seen it before or since.

Interesting how some peoples’ OHs have put up with eating things the don’t like over many years. My DH has always been clear about his dislikes (quite a few!). He dislikes beetroot, but I didn’t tell him last week that we were eating beetroot burgers. He said they were lovely but didn’t think to ask what was in them. He’s never eaten a fresh tomato but is ok with tinned variety, essential for many pasta sauces.

For years I gave MIL chocolate gingers as part of her Christmas, as I mistakenly thought they were her favourites.
One year just before Christmas, she asked me not to waste my money. She hated them because her MIL used to buy them for her, and they brought back unhappy memories. .

Just out of interest, do you butter the toast before putting baked beans on it, or before adding cheese under the grill?

Tell myself I can save a few calories and it doesn't taste any different, what do you do?

Butter on hot toast is great but only if you eat it right away. Otherwise it goes soggy and horrible.
I once had breakfast in a pub B&B the, the toast was very thin, smothered in butter - a really inedible soggy mess.

baggs talk of your dad (I assume no longer here) brought tears to my eyes as reminded me of my beloved dad who did all sorts of daft things to show how much he adored us.
Pamted - my mum could never remember if our next door neighbour was called frank or fred (it was fred) so she called him Freck - and so did we all poor man!
Hot toast yummy, cold toast yuk btw. especially with cream cheese (low fat triangle) and then a layer of cherry compote - got to get to the toaster NOW >>>

We're married 44 years and my husband seems to think I love sausage and mash! I keep telling him I'm not fussy about sausages and he still wants to cook them.

I’m with Niobe - nothing worse that lite spread on hot toast.
I think my family are far too forthright to suffer in silence like others!

I like to eat the toast while still hot, not just butter it

Cold toast with butter and honey. Hot toast with marmite. People do think I am strange liking cold toast tho.

cold toast is the best, if you put marmite on hot toast you get bare patches

For years (25+) I called a neighbour Irene. It was only just before I moved away that she told me her name was Iris!

After 40 years marriagae, DH has just told me that he likes his "mushrooms peeled. They don'et tase the same if not"!!!
I prefer toast buttered cold, I don't like what DS2, when about 4, called "nappy toast/bread". [leave it to your imagination]

Biker Well you live and learn my friend,I must admit if I have toast I do like it cold so the butter is spread thickly, oh and it has to be doorstep thickness just like my dad used to cut it from the loaf.

This talk of toast has dredged up a mental picture of my dad making buttered toast for my mum. He used to squash all round the edges because she didn't like hard crusts

He also used to make toast towers for us kids (five of us): slices of toast buttered and jammed, cut into four fingers and fingers stacked in a tower two by two like a Jenga tower

I don't care for hot soggy toast either! As for parsnips, my DH didn't know he liked them until I asked him to buy some a couple of years after we were married. He always shops and never bought them, as his mother had never made them for him.

After thirty odd years I discovered my eldest son has never liked Sunday roasts. Or my OH carrots - and he always clears his plate so as not to upset me. Knowing he’s suffered carrots all these years upsets me more!

I have only just discovered that my younger (pensioner) brother is colour blind!

I also like my toast buttered when cold, we have a friend who won’t eat cold toast, with or without butter. Isn’t it good we are all different?

Nothing, and I mean nothing, worse than hot toast buttered using 'lighter' butter. Lighter butter just contains more water and when you put it on hot toast you get soggy toast!
