Turmeric - help!

It looks like ginger. I keep fresh ginger in the freezer - it's much easier to grate when frozen.

Can't even get dried turmeric in Germany.

Keeping the turmeric fresh and in good condition for long time, one should always try to dry it in sunlight accurately and and if wanted powder it as and when needed for better use and storage.

I'm sure I read somewhere that turmeric is supposed to be good for arthritis type pain. Make an infusion of some sort maybe?

If you are on Face Book Daphne there is a very good Turmeric Discussion Group. They are full of expert hints and tips. It's true, it is very good for all sorts of ailments! I think it is better absorbed by the body if you use a little oil and freshly ground black pepper when cooking.

I mixed some dry tumeric (had it in the cupboard for YEARS) with boiled water to form a paste and then put it on an infected toe. Cleared it up better than antiseptic cream. I guess you could do the same with your fresh tumeric. I think it is one of the latest 'in' things so you are obviously well ahead of the rest of us Daphne.

Morrisons used to stock an exotic fruit and vegetable range (they no longer do - probably too exotic for the likes of us!), among which was fresh turmeric. I never bought any - I use the powdered stuff for currys - but I am intrigued by it. It is supposed to have wonderful health giving properties. I wondered if you could use it to make an infusion like I do with ginger for colds.

Turmeric in warm milk is also supposed to be a treatment for coughs.

You can make 'golden Milk' with it (sounds very sleazy!) which is supposed to have fantastic results from warding off colds to improving dementia!

Turmeric is in season now in S India. It is a rhisome[ spelling] and comes with a root in the market. It is sold for Pongal, their equivalent of the harvest festival.
They cook rice in a special earthenware pot with rice dried fruits sugar and give as a gift. I believe it has cleansing effects. In S india women clean their faces with it, giving them an orange look.

daphne just cook with it, as you would do with ginger or garlic. It's actually got quite a mild flavour, despite the colour of powdered turmeric.

You can probably freeze it in the same way as ginger. Maybe sliced up first, then it's easily used for drinks.

Have never seen fresh turmeric. How exciting! Hope you find ways to use it....and such use will keep all January germs away from the Broon household!
