Jersey royals

OK - made meal last night which was delicious. The jerseys were part boiled then drizzled in extra virgin olive oil and a big glug of balsamic then roasted in oven with fresh thyme for 30 mins. They were very tasty but I could have used a less expensive potato as I'm now convinced they don't justify the cost even though the recipe stated jersey royals.
The chicken breasts were stuffed with mascarpone grated lemon rind garlic and thyme leaves then wrapped around with parma ham and roasted on top of pots.
Hubby and I really enjoyed - will be making this again with potatoes recommend ed on this post.

I don't know about other folk in France, but we struggle to get decent new potatoes here, except for the ones we grow. Here in Normandy, we are nearer to Jersey than the UK, but have never seen the royals on sale (which doesn't surprise me). The primeur potatoes are all really disappointing IMHO.

That's how I make my potato salad, but I've never eaten it hot! Will give it a try. Sometimes I put quartered hard boiled eggs in it, or a chopped granny smith apple (but not both at once!).

I agree about Jersey Royals being overrated and over priced as well. I've always been a fan of Charlottes, but last year I tried Vivaldi potatoes from Sainsbury's. Really tasty. DH likes them in a hot potato salad - when cooked, toss them in a bowl with some mayo [low fat is fine] and either chopped red or spring onions, cut them through roughly with a sharp knife and eat while still warm. You'll never buy supermarket potato salad again. Just had some for lunch with a few slices of roast beef and some chutney. Rosie

Just thought I'd let you know that I have bought some more although this time from a greengrocers (is the term greengrocer politically correct as am always getting the political bit wrong these days!)
Anyway - not cooking them until tomorrow night as trying out a new recipes from last saturdays mail supplement 'Roasted jersey royals with chicken and parma ham' will let you know how I get on.
Meanwhile - just having a glass of veno - well it is Friday night!

Charlotte potataoes really are the best!!! Specially snacking as cold leftovers, spread with a little mayonnaise and a sprinkle of sea salt. While you are cooking the next meal.

Had my first Jersey Royals today. Very disappointed with the flavour, same as I was last year. Agree they are grossly overpriced. Don't think I'll bother again. Pembrokeshire 'tato newi' are delicious, and Cornish ones also.

Could never understand all the fuss about Jerseys - overrated and overpriced but perhaps I bought them too early in the season. I'll have to try them again. Love potatoes cooked in many ways.

With regard to Jersey Royals, I wonder whether they are being grown differently I believe that they used to cover them with some sort of seaweed - maybe they have stopped doing that? They definately taste different to how they used to taste

The Channel Isles are British Crown Dependencies. They do not form part of the United Kingdom. The same goes for the Isle of Man.

Well part of the UK I guess - although they have a small sort of government - I'm always doing that forgetting that something English is England not the UK. I may sound English but wasn't brought up here and keep getting things a bit awry, sorry.

No, I wasn't including Jerseys (Jersey isn't in England, is it?).

Anagram when you say English varieties do you include jerseys in that?Might upset a few people otherwise.

Same here, I much prefer the English varieties. Anglesey new potatoes are delicious, too!

Cheshires and Pembrokes for me when in season. I could eat a whole plate of them with nothing apart from butter & salt and pepper! Haven't bought Jerseys for many, many years.

Cheshires are nice if you are lucky to get them at the right time,but the best pots I have ever had was up in Scotland when we stayed at a lodge in Dunoon we went to one of those fabulous houses that open up the front lounge as a restaurant and had the most flavoursome moist pots ever I always meant to go back and ask the owner what they where but never got around to it.

We get Cornish new potatoes down here in our local greengrocer and they are delicious - won't buy jerseys if these are available. Also if you can, buy jerseys at a greengrocer rather then a supermarket. [and I work for one!!!] as they are better.

I have never been able to beat the taste of Charlotte potatoes. My home-grown ones were disappointing last year, but Monty Don says his earlies were poor, it was the weather conditions , they would break up during cooking, even when steamed.
