UK’s over reaction to Omicron.
(257 Posts)Dr Angelique Coetzee the South African doctor that discovered the Omicron strain has spoken publicly about the over reaction to Omicron and has called for calm.
According to this doctor the variant is very mild compared to Delta.
In SA only 26% of the population are vaccinated and Omicron has not caused a surge in hospital admissions.
Why are we destroying the economy, putting people’s health and well-being at risk for a strain that’s milder than all the previous strains?
This is so right

Boris Johnson can't tell us to cut down on socialising to tackle Covid because he didn't.
Boris Johnson can't impose meaningful restrictions to tackle Covid because his MPs won't back him.
Boris Johnson can't tackle Covid. And we're going to pay the price.
Monkeypox in Africa now so let it stay there

The biggest danger is all the constant propaganda, all the jumped up hype causing panic. There are absolutely no statistics to prove this is a danger to human life, there is not test & it’s winter, a time for viruses. I’m getting on with my life, had enough of his pantomime.
I get where you’re coming from chrissy08. I wish they stop telling us how many people have Covid (what does it matter so long as they are not too poorly & managing their symptoms quietly at home, like a lof of people I know have and are doing).
I don’t think ‘cases’ are important per se.
I think ‘numbers in hospital’ is important. That’s the most relevant figure. Anything else is white noise.
No it’s not an overreaction. Have you seen the latest figures?
If this variant isn’t mild we’re in deep dippy doodaa. Hopefully it is but we can’t take that risk. And Johnson can’t impose greater restrictions because of the 22committe: it’s their way or the highway..(for him, anyway)
Totally agree!! I have had enough and l am sure l am not alone.
There was an opportunity to educate the public about viruses- and how they can live healthier lives- but instead the government prefers to try to terrify the population into doing whatever they want them to do. People are now confused, cross and weary- or anxious. It doesn't look like progress to me
I thought Johnson was going to encourage us to lead healthier lives after he had the virus?

... I'm thinking about it. I don't know how much I should disclose. It's pretty dire - mistakes were made. One, which could have been lethal (to me). But it mostly concerns other patients and staff.
I think one of the ward sisters posts on GN - or did - so I'm really not sure how much I should say, or if I might be breaking any 'rules'... and some of the things I was told by the nurses were told in confidence.
Difficult.
The important thing is to keep a written record of it but without disclosing it to people.

So, if you've had enough, what do you suggest?

Cases are important. Once the government stops releasing facts, we really are in trouble.
I expect you know that there's already lobbying to stop including people who catch Covid in hospital (and sometimes die) in the official figures. It's a way of covering up, so the poster whose husband caught Covid in hospital and subsequently died of Covid will just be forgotten about.
Anyone notice that Sunak was nowhere around this week giving at the very least moral support to Britains businesses?
In California apparently - well good for him. Like all the Tories he deserves a well earned break.
Inflation at over 5% now.
Why didn’t Boris close the borders as soon as this new variant was discovered. He always takes days, sometimes weeks to implement this. If he had stopped in and out the day it was announced from South Africa we wouldn’t have these escalating cases we have got. Yes it probably would have come here eventually but not in the amounts that we are seeing now. At least half a dozen planes landed the day South Africa made it public and I bet The government knew before that. Testing before they left would have been helpful but he’s only doing that now. Everything Boris has done us barn door, horse bolted.

Yes, I have kept a note. I guess that's one of the reasons the experience still plays on my mind.
I think it's probably OK to mention the fact that the wards were often run by a total number of staff considered to be 'risky' for the safe management of the number of patients. Everyone knows this happens anyway, but it's the reality of what this actually means that is alarming - because I saw first-hand what happens to patients when there are not enough staff to manage them.

He did but I'm sure he is following the advice himself.
I have two days left at work before Christmas and feel like I am dodging bullets! I cannot be the only one.

Handy really as he has a very splendid holiday home there.
Not sure what business tops the crises with our home grown businesses.
France is imposing very strict restrictions on UK nationals (except HGV drivers) travelling there from this weekend. Sensible precaution I think, though it will ruin many people's plans.

Yes and now all and sundry will be allowed in again, who is checking that they all test before flying here. Not a lot seeing as how a huge number tested positive on one flight arriving. Succumbed to pressure from African countries. No other country has.
Streeting tells
@TimesRadio
“we understand the chancellor is currently out of the country in California. So perhaps he might want to get himself on a flight back and get a grip on the situation because businesses need certainty and confidence now."

At what point will the Tory voters admit that their party just tell lies?
according to Sajid Javid the UK actually alerted the world to the Omicron variant. Not South Africa then?

No argument from me Alegrias1
What I see from my daily dip into conspiracy theory land (mixed metaphor; sorry!), is that the lying, self-justifying, awarding contracts to mates/donors, popularity seeking, et al by this government gives the conspiracy theorists ample evidence for distrusting the measures taken, and for trying to influence people against vaccination. They then dismiss the scientific experts advising the government and pile on the story of the great takeover due to come. If there had not been the ridiculous protecting of MPs, staff (MH, DC etc.) who had broken the 'rules'; BJ not wearing a mask where everyone else has to; the saga of the Christmas parties; I think there would not be such a large number of people rejecting vaccines. The people in the part of the conspiracy pool that I dip into are absolutely furious with the majority of people who take the vaccine, wear masks, socially distance. They say that only they are standing up strongly to prevent the great reset, the country turning into a version of Nazi Germany, and that we are just blindly letting it happen. 'Can they not see it yet?' they say; 'how will they explain to their children that they didn't stand up for their freedom?' they say. Meanwhile they are standing up for everyone's rights so bravely by ....... not wearing masks, not taking tests, not being vaccinated! Far from feeling guilty or selfish, they accuse the 'jabbed' of being selfish! And the misinformation they transmit convinces a wider audience.
