I’m really not sure whether to laugh or cry at your comment. Are you seriously monitoring my movements? What times I go out for a walk? Seriously....Is this the digital equivalent of curtain twitching?
Does it really matter to you whether I’m out for a walk in the morning or in the afternoon? Would you like me to send you my daily itinerary so you can monitor me? As it happened I was a bit late setting off this morning through the woods as I had a paint delivery and was just about to go up on the moors when I thought I would have a look at the thread.
As you can see from the attached photo it was really difficult fighting my way through the hoards of people who I’m selfishly endangering ! Oh and thank you I am safely home before it starts to get dark.
Tomorrow I shall be out from 11.0 to 4.0. I won’t need to drive and will stay in the valley. I will probably not see another soul all day and it will be bliss.
A thank you to all the contributors who have supported me both on here and by PM. I wasn’t aware that this facility existed until yesterday but it was lovely to hear from all the people who believe that an isolated walk is beneficial to our mental and physical health as well as being a great way to pass the time.

The problem as far as i can see lies in the definition - or rather in the absence of a written definition - of the words 'local area'.

I have no idea at all what would mean to me. Our parish boundaries? The area covered by South Northants Council? Something else? Not that I know where any of those boundaries begin and end.

It's neither clear not specific about what this means, and makes the fine handed out seem very unfair to me.

I bet it wouldn't stand up in court!

There are plenty of walks close to Ashby-de-la-Zouch so maybe it's not so out of proportion.

The rules are stay at home and go a short distance for exercise.

We wouldn't be in this mess if people had obeyed the rules in the first place. It is draconian but it needs to be.

This is shocking, out of proportion and unnecessary

I keep getting told "Oh you are lucky to live in Cornwall. So many beaches to go to for walks". I don't as this means I have to drive, min 30 mins travel time.

I am lucky as we live in a wooded area that we own. My walk is the same every day. A 30 mins walk with the dog around the wood. I neither see or hear anyone.

Gov indict a walk around eg a NT grounds is allowed. I have a NT property but it is 15 min drive away. I normally go there once a week for a 2/3 hour walk. Because I have somewhere within walking distance, I don't intend to go there until lockdown is over.

I would have been clearer if we had been told not to drive to exercise or exercise in places you can walk to from your home.

I was really referring to the thread mentioned by cupafful.

Until my post at 12.25 there was not mention of Miss C.

The countries who have seen better results on controlling this virus, like Australia, have enforced strict rules on outside trips with equally strict enforcement. It depends what we want really, a three hour discussion or stay home to save lives, as of course politely, because that’s our society, by the NHS.

I would love to head off to Dartmoor for a few hours but our Deputy Chief Constable came on the local news yesterday evening and said only journeys of up to 4 miles allowed.

I can’t believe some posters are still making unpleasant comments about Miss C’s very healthy and beneficial walking routine.

I can't see any unpleasant remarks still being made.

I certainly was most concerned by a poster on GN stating she was going for a 5 hr hike with a friend across the Yorkshire moorlands. Given I'm an irregular viewer on GN, I didn't read the entire thread, but the person struck me as highly selfish given had either party had an accident, the emergency services would have had to be called out. They could well have had to attend a hospital putting more pressure on those stretched facilities.
She appeared very entitled never considering the lateral fallout of her decisions.

That was indeed me. Although I’m not going to get involved in a long and heated discussion again I thought that I would let you know that fully intend to go for long and totally isolated walks today and every day. My walking partner happens to be the only British woman (as far as we are aware) to have completed the 3 great walks in USA as a through hiker. One of these walks is from Mexico to Canada along the Rockies 3000mikes over a couple of seasons. The hike is known as the Great Divide. She has also completed the Appalachian way at least 3 times. I think that we are experienced enough walkers to know what we are doing on a low pennine hill. I live in a tall thin 4 story house with 3 flights of steep stairs. In all honesty I’m more likely to have an accident at home than on the hills. With the right gear, full waterproofs, ice grips and poles the benefits of exercise can not be beaten.
Tomorrow I shall wander through our beautiful local NT woodland, half a mile walk from home, onto the moors and back round the valley. Never more than a few miles from home.

How on earth can someone saying they usually have a couple of long walks a day be deemed boastful?

NotSpaghetti. Good that you got such a speedy reply. I would like to suggest that the reply indicates they have not been given clear specifics to apply to the Gov guidelines. That
in itself suggests that it is open to each Force to interpret as they think. Not very helpful to Police officers nor to those in their neighbourhoods who could be unfairly fined.( I should say that I and my family live in England and different rules may apply in the Devolved Regions ).

I have been told off roundly too because I wanted to drive a mile to get to somewhere flat for a walk.
My striding and climbing days are over.

So I have stayed at home although I am not watching daytime TV.

Well to be fair MissC had just been called selfish and entitled by someone who had not read the whole thread (yet again)

I had a lovely 4 mile walk this morning from home in the snow loads of vehicles getting stuck but many kind blokes helping dig them out.

Dear dear SD Is there anything about Scotland or where you live that you like ? I've never come across anyone who complains so much about the place they call home .i suppose its that BAD SNP's fault that you live in an area with nowhere to walk!!

I love where I live. What I don’t love is the way the SNP have decimated funding for this area - hence the lack of gritting right now, the decimation of education and our health/fire/ambulance services, the the lack of support for business and the riding roughshod over local concerns.

As for complaining, I guess I’ve just picked up Sturgeon’s non-stop whining habit.

This is the current advice on the Scottish government website. Maybe I’m even thicker than I thought but I can’t really understand the part about the 5 mile boundary. Anyone able to simplify it?

^You can travel for local outdoor sport or exercise such as meeting another person, walking, cycling, golf or running that starts and finishes at the same place (which can be up to 5 miles from the boundary of your local authority area), as long as you abide by the rules on meeting other households.^

That makes more sense than “in your own village or town”. So much of the advice given by this Government is ill thought out! Walking or cycling within the limits of the Scottish Government’s advice is not going to increase the spread of covid if people keep their distance from others and wear masks as appropriate.
